Description

Akima Facilities Operations (AFO) is seeking a Safety Manager at its Letterkenny Army Depot. The Safety Manager will oversee all installation- and contract-specific safety and occupational health requirements within the Letterkenny Army Depot environment. This role ensures compliance with OSHA, DoD, Army, and depot-level safety regulations across manufacturing, maintenance, industrial operations, material handling, and heavy-equipment work areas. The Safety Manager leads risk assessments, conducts workplace inspections, drives safety training programs, and partners with depot leadership to maintain a safe, compliant, and mission-ready worksite.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive Safety and Occupational Health Program aligned with OSHA, DA PAM 385-10, AR 385-10, and LEAD standards.

  • Conduct routine inspections, audits, and hazard assessments across shops, warehouses, administrative spaces, and production lines.

  • Lead accident investigations, root-cause analyses, and corrective action plans to prevent recurrence.

  • Coordinate and deliver mandatory safety training, including hazard communication, PPE usage, lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space, forklift/material handling, and equipment-specific safety modules.

  • Ensure compliance with Army industrial safety requirements related to welding, machining, vehicle maintenance, explosive handling (if applicable), and chemical storage.

  • Maintain and update the Safety Management Plan, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and emergency response procedures.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact with depot Safety Office personnel, Government representatives, and internal leadership.

  • Monitor environmental and industrial hygiene requirements, including air quality, noise exposure, and hazardous waste procedures.

  • Track and report safety metrics, trends, near-misses, and leading indicators; provide recommendations for continuous improvement.

  • Support incident drills, emergency preparedness, and depot safety campaigns

  • Manages and implements programs to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths, and financial losses.

  • Develops accident-prevention and loss-control systems and programs for incorporation into operational policies of organization. Manages and coordinates safety activities, through subordinate supervisory personnel, to ensure implementation of safety activities throughout program.

  • Identifies and appraises conditions that could produce accidents and financial losses and evaluates potential extent of injuries resulting from accidents.

  • Conducts research studies to identify hazards and evaluate loss producing potential of given system, operation, or process.

  • Devises methods to evaluate safety program and conducts or directs evaluations.
