About the Role:
The Air Force Test Center is looking for a Full-Time Safety and Occupational Health Specialist (NH-0018-03) to work at the 412 Test Wing Occupational Safety office (412TW/SEG) at Edwards Air Force Base.
The 412th Test Wing Safety Office advises the Wing Commander on all safety matters and supports all commanders with flight, occupational, test and weapons safety programs. To foster a proactive safety culture, protect our airman and resources and preserve mission capability. The purpose of this position is to support the 412 TW Occupational Safety office with managing all aspects of an effective safety and occupational health program and provide advisory safety services to tenant organizations.

Typical 2026 salary range: $104,349 - $161,313 per year (includes locality
Telework Information: YA002: Eligible for situational telework only, including Emergency and OPM prescribed "Unscheduled Telework"
Travel Requirements: Up to 25% possible
Direct Hire Authority: NO 6-MONTH WAIT! Recently retired and/or retiring from MILITARY service ARE eligible for immediate appointment for AFTC positions. The 180-day waiting period has been waived for AFTC to hire recently retired and/or retiring service members.
Desired Skills:
- 2 years Occupational Safety and Health experience desired.
- Undergraduate/Graduate degree in Occupational Safety and Health desired.
- Accredited education in Confined Space, Fall Protection and Hazardous Energy Control desired.
- Experience using the Air Force Safety Automated System desired
- Familiar with Department of Air Force Instructions as they relate to Occupational Safety and
Heath desired
Major Duties:
- Performs periodic facility inspections and program assessments to determine compliance with occupational safety and health standards.
- Investigates reportable and non-reportable mishaps involving personal injuries, occupational illnesses, and property damage over a wide range of operations.
- Reviews plans and specifications for service contracts, new construction, major building alterations, and changes in installation equipment and monitors projects to completion.
- Develops, presents and provides technical guidance, safety training and instruction to supervisors and employees.
- Compiles and analyzes mishap data, identifies trends, and develops comprehensive recommendations to reduce or eliminate mishaps.
- Recommends appropriate measures to eliminate or control hazardous operating procedures.
- Prepares recommended changes, or supplements to regulations and manuals and develops specialized local procedures defining mishap prevention.
- Randomly spot checks construction sites and notifies contracting officers or project managers when safety violations or unsafe practices are observed.
- Promotes safety through campaign events and oral presentations at local and regional safety committee meetings.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship (Required)
- Depending on the type of position (competitive/excepted) you are selected for, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period OR 2-year trial period. Upon completion of your probationary/trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
- Must be able to obtain & maintain Secret security clearance
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical
- Expected to operate a government vehicle on the airfield/flight line.
- Subject to Temporary Duty assignment for approximately 30 days per year
- Knowledge of established safety and occupational health principles, practices, procedures, laws, regulations, and current legislative issues as they relate to the military installation ground safety program.
- Knowledge of the requirements, methods, and techniques of accident and mishap investigation, analysis, resolution of safety problems, and formal reporting procedures.
- Knowledge of risk assessment methods and techniques for evaluation of occupational safety and health risks.
- Knowledge of communication techniques, principles, and regulations to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in responding to work related problems and questions.
- Knowledge of basic construction standards, methods, practices, techniques, materials, and equipment to determine compliance with regulations and standards.
- Knowledge of standard training techniques, methods, and materials sufficient to develop and present formal training and instructional sessions.
- Skill in the interpretation of engineering drawings and specifications sufficient to identify hazardous conditions in proposed facilities.
- Ability to plan, organize work, and meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of basic aircraft and flight line maintenance operations.
