Summary
The Valley County Road & Bridge Department is seeking a dedicated, master-level professional to fill the role of Road Maintenance Technician 3. As the highest-level technical and leadership position within the technician series, this role is ideal for an elite equipment operator and working field lead who thrives in an active environment, excels at managing complex projects, and takes pride in keeping the county's infrastructure safe and reliable for the community.

This is a full-time position with full county benefits.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities
Working under general direction as a working field lead, the Road Maintenance Technician 3 plays a vital role in maintaining the safety and integrity of county roads and bridges, while overseeing daily crew assignments and project safety.
  • Spring & Summer Operations: During the warmer months, the technician organizes, schedules, and directs the daily workflow of a team of technicians. They oversee the execution of major projects, such as large-scale chip sealing, bridge rehabilitations, major culvert replacements, and road realignments. They monitor materials usage, track progress, maintain accurate digital or written logs, and coordinate with utility companies, right-of-way owners, and the public to resolve localized project complaints.
  • Winter Operations: When winter weather hits, the technician takes on critical, high-level operational leadership. In addition to executing elite winter plowing operations, the Technician 3 assumes operational leadership of a district or a specific shift during severe weather or emergency responses in the absence of the Road Maintenance Supervisor.

A successful candidate will maintain elite operational proficiency across all classes of heavy equipment owned by the county, serve as a primary trainer/evaluator who audits and signs off on lower-level technician competencies, and ensure strict adherence to OSHA, MSHA, and Valley County safety regulations by conducting daily tailboard safety meetings.

Distinguishing Characteristics
The Road Maintenance Technician 3 is distinguished from the Road Maintenance Technician 2 position in that incumbents focus significantly on project management, crew leadership, safety compliance, and administrative reporting, while maintaining elite-level heavy equipment operation skills.

Serving as a primary technical advisor to the Road Maintenance Supervisor, the Technician 3 takes on higher-level responsibilities such as auditing lower-level staff competencies and managing jobsite logistics.
