Full Job Description
A Brief Overview

The Perinatal Safety Nurse will work collaboratively with the Director of Nursing for Women's and Children's Services and the OB Physician Chairman with providing oversight of all safety and quality initiatives in the care of Obstetrical patients as per the Safe Motherhood Initiative Safety Bundles and practice guidelines recommended by ACOG, AWHONN and other national and state regulatory agencies.

What you will do
  • Serves as a patient safety advocate and clinical role model in obstetrics. • Keeps current account of changing national standards of clinical practice and safety science literature. Disseminates pertinent safety and specialty related information. • Presents patient and staff concerns to appropriate forum/leadership. • Participates in and contributes to clinical review activities. • Assists with Perinatal QA and PI committee meetings. • Assists and supports the healthcare team with disclosure when adverse events or untoward outcome occurs and coordinates debriefing sessions. • Leads patient safety daily board rounds with members of multidisciplinary team. • Leads patient safety and environmental safety walking rounds.
  • Monitors Clinical Outcomes • Encourages staff to recognize and report adverse events and near misses. • Facilitates and leads EFM strip rounds and review with a multidisciplinary team. • Performs collaborative review of adverse occurrences and near misses. Incorporates review and findings into educational and remedial efforts in collaboration with members of the team. • Maintains corrective action plans as determined after records and processes review. • Assesses the documentation of charts and provides timely feedback to clinicians. • Facilitates data collection as requested by internal and external bodies.
  • Facilitates Multidisciplinary Communication and Education • Fosters and promotes participation by all members of the team in education programs and monthly/quarterly drills. • Develops and conducts drills to sustain competency in unit initiatives in conjunction with the Safe Motherhood Initiative and other evidence based best practices. • Collaborates with Clinical Nursing Educator and OB Physician and Nursing Leadership to facilitate clinical drills for high risk situations (e.g. shoulder dystocia, hemorrhage, obstetrical hypertension, cardiac arrest, infant abduction, and others) • Promotes adoption and institution of standardized communication tools and elements of crew resource management across disciplines.


Education Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing. required and
  • Bachelor's Degree BSN required and
  • Master's Degree MSN preferred


Experience Qualifications
  • 10+ years Of Labor and Delivery experience required

Licenses and Certifications
  • National Certification in OB Nursing upon hire required and
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure NJ RN License upon hire required and
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support BLS through American Heart Association upon hire required
