Job Description

Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required; performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision. Assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team.

Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Unit Director and in accordance with established protocols, the Registered Nurse coordinates comprehensive pre-operative clearance for complex surgical and procedural patients. Responsibilities include obtaining and reviewing outside medical records, collaborating with advanced practice providers (APPs), physicians, residents, and multidisciplinary surgical teams, providing patient and family education, and coordinating care across multiple surgical specialties.

Clinical responsibilities include performing pre-procedure symptom assessments, patient follow-up, vital sign collection as needed. The RN participates in perioperative planning and collaborates with anesthesiology teams to optimize patient care.

The RN rounds with anesthesiologists on postoperative patients each morning, assesses patient status, communicates findings, and helps develop and implement individualized care plans. Responsibilities include working with epidural and patient-controlled analgesia infusions, monitoring therapeutic response, assessing for complications, and ensuring safe pain management practices.

Additional responsibilities include performing comprehensive assessments and managing post-procedural pain in infants, children, and adolescents postop. The RN administers complex pharmacologic therapies, manages specialized equipment, participates in multidisciplinary clinical rounds, and collaborates closely with patients, families, physicians, APPs, residents, anesthesiologists, and serving as a clinical resource by educating nursing staff, healthcare providers, patients, and families on pain management strategies, procedures, equipment use, and safe care practices.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
• Minimum five year in-patient pediatric RN experience Pre-op/PACU and surgical patient population
• Experience at an academic medical center

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in Cardiovascular specialty Experience at a University Hospital setting
• BSN
• Minimum 1 year Ambulatory Clinic experience

Licenses/Certifications:

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
• Current American Heart Association BLS certification
• Current American Heart Association PALS

Salary Information

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
