Summary

The Nurse Manager is responsible for and performs line management functions for the assigned area. Demonstrates responsibility for the overall fiscal management of the department, conducts and manages performance improvement activities, develops and monitors departmental policies and procedures, acts as a Chief Retention Officer, and performs human resource functions. Provides leadership to the unit aligned with Peake of Care and Relationship Based Care principles. Leads unit culture and functions in keeping with the organizational and nursing mission, vision, and values.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.

Financial Management

  • Prepares yearly operating and capital budgets based upon departmental initiatives, projected volumes and benchmarked staffing standards.
  • Controls the financial performance and productivity of assigned departments to meet budget.
  • Manages personnel scheduling according to budget, volume, and patient acuity.
  • Identifies and explains monthly budget variances.
  • Develops and implements cost reduction and revenue initiatives within the department.
  • Monitors department payroll to assure adherence to policies by staff and eliminates unnecessary overtime.

Patient Care Management

  • Creates a culture of service excellence that ensures patient and family satisfaction and optimal patient outcomes.
  • Utilizes patient rounding to ensure that care standards are being met and analyzes patient care needs to guide staffing decisions.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors unit quality improvement plans.
  • Establishes collaborative relationships with physicians, other disciplines, and other leaders to achieve clinical practice outcomes.
  • Recommends and implements changes in clinical practice or process based on clinical findings, multidisciplinary recommendations and evidence-based practice.
  • Creates and maintains an environment that promotes patient and staff safety.
  • Maintains nursing care and unit operations in keeping with CRH, HFAP, regulatory, and professional nursing standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Identifies, documents, and submits follow-up of problem solving for patient complaints and/or safety events.
  • Provides structure that facilitates emotional and situational support for peers and nursing staff.
  • Supports timely and effective patient throughput and other initiatives that encourage and enhance the patient's hospital experience.

Human Resource Management

  • Manages human resource functions according to organizational policy and procedure.
  • Recruits, selects, and retains qualified staff whose performance and values demonstrate the goals of the team.
  • Encourages, maximizes, and provides opportunities for staff development.
  • Formulates and implements strategies for professional advancement and retention.
  • Recognizes staff for performance excellence and effectively evaluates and coaches staff with areas of needed development.

Education and Experience

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Minimum Required:

  • Applicant must be licensed to work as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia or compact state. Must have clinical certification appropriate for care area and/or nurse leader/executive certification or obtain within one year of hire.
  • Must maintain BLS. Other certifications as required of nurses working in the clinical area assigned.
