POSITION SUMMARY

The Perioperative Clinical Educator is a skilled and experienced professional Registered Nurse (RN) responsible for excellence in the provision of educational services. Reporting to the Director of Perioperative Services educator is accountable for the education program planning for clinical and ancillary staff within the Perioperative Services departments. The Clinical Educator incorporates considerations of Age and Population Specific awareness and the Watson Model of Care in all program planning.. The role is involved in the assessment, development and evaluation of staff competencies and considers compliance with regulatory and professional standards, improvement of quality, service levels, safety, customer satisfaction and collaborative relationships in the process. The position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. It is expected that the employee will demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values. The employee shall support Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital's strategic plan and the goals and direction of the quality and performance improvement process activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Assists in the implementation of Education Department goals and ensures that the program development is aligned with the mission/vision and strategic plan of MLKCH.
  2. Keeps the Director of Perioperative Services and Sr. Dir. Of Education informed of educational activities, status of programs, and proposals for new and revised programs.
  3. Participates in Surgical Quality Committee and assists with statistical data to support Performance Improvement initiatives.
  4. Participates in the annual educational needs assessment process with the all of the Clinical Educators and assists with the review of data and annual program planning.
  5. Plans and implements unit specific orientation of new staff to Perioperative Services
  6. Develop/review/revise Policies, Procedures and Protocols
  7. Develop /update Unit based Competencies and ensure staff is current
  8. Assist/conduct Mock Drills - Fire in OR, Code Blue & Malignant Hyperthermia
  9. Collaborate with Education department on unit based and house wide educational presentations; assists with General Hospital Orientation and Clinical Orientation for new hires.
  10. Assist/ conduct unit based services
  11. Promote the use of evidence based practice
  12. Collaborate with Director of Perioperative Service to plan an annual educational program for inservices, competency review and goal setting. Include Education department in process
  13. Collaborate with Director of Perioperative Services to provide 1:1 teaching with staff where a practice development need is identified.
  14. Cultivates positive and collaborative relationships within the Education Department and with the nursing and clinical leadership team to ensure that educational needs are being met in the most effective manner possible.
  15. Provides leadership through educational activities to bring about changes in clinical practice.
  16. Evaluates education programs on a regular basis and plans and implements improvements based on this evaluation and feedback from customers.
  17. Participate in hospital-wide Survey Readiness Activities.
  18. Provides support and collaborates with the Versant Residency Program in an effort to oversee New Graduate Nurses and Fellows assigned to the Perioperative Department.
  19. Ensures the curriculum utilizes the information generated from the Quality and Performance Improvement activities and MLKCH nursing and clinical Policies and Procedures as a foundation and incorporates these components into the education provided to the staff.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education

Certified Nurse of Operating Room (CNOR), required to be completed within 12 months of hire.

Bachelors degree required

B. Qualifications/Experience

Minimum of two (2) years of clinical nursing experience in Perioperative Services and a minimum one (1) year educator experience in an acute care setting, preferred.

Current California Nursing license.

Certification in Staff Development preferred.

Experience with implementation of an EMR preferred.

C. Special Skills/Knowledge

Bilingual skills preferred (Spanish)

Basic computer skills

Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) within 90 days of hire

Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
