Full Job Description
As a Regulatory Compliance Counsel, you will serve as a trusted legal advisor within the compliance and regulatory affairs program, collaborating with leaders across the business to provide strategic legal and regulatory guidance. This involves building strong relationships throughout the organization and finding opportunities to educate the Company about what compliance is and why it's important to our collective success. You will own the compliance incident management program, help develop and maintain the global regulatory compliance framework, and lead complex cross-functional projects. You will also educate and coach team members and business partners on compliance obligations, helping build a culture of integrity and regulatory excellence throughout Hagerty.

This position will play an integral role in the compliance and regulatory affairs program for Hagerty, ensuring that Hagerty promotes an organizational culture that encourages ethical business conduct and a commitment to compliance with the law, resulting in a positive image to associates, customers, vendors, and the community.

What you'll do
  • Serve as a strategic legal and compliance partner, collaborating with leaders across the business to support enterprise initiatives aligned with Hagerty's long-term strategic goals.
  • Provide legal, compliance, regulatory, and negotiation advice on matters of complexity, helping business teams navigate regulatory requirements with sound judgment.
  • Conduct and oversee legal and regulatory research, delivering actionable guidance to compliance leadership and business units.
  • Serve as the central point of contact for the compliance incident management program, supervising incident identification, tracking, and resolution.
  • Support a global regulatory compliance framework, accommodating country and jurisdiction-specific variations.
  • Lead or support key components of cross-functional compliance projects, ensuring delivery meets timing and quality standards (e.g., communications, legal charts, policies, procedures, training materials, and compliance resources).
  • Draft company-wide and departmental compliance policies and procedures, and memorandums.
  • Prepare and deliver effective regulatory compliance training to educate and support business teams.
  • Analyze compliance issues and legal restrictions and communicate findings to supervisors, department managers, and business constituents.
  • Provide high-level support and analysis for the regulatory change management function.
  • Manage, prioritize, and accomplish multiple tasks within established timeframes.
  • Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of information, protect the assets of the Company, act ethically and with integrity, and adhere to Hagerty's Code of Conduct and policies and procedures.


This might describe you
  • JD degree with strong academic credentials and active membership in good standing of a state bar (any jurisdiction).
  • Five or more years of prior legal experience, preferably in regulatory compliance and insurance at an insurance company or a large insurance organization.
  • Strong understanding of the relationship between insurer, agent, insured, insurance laws/regulations, licensing requirements, and the structure of insurance companies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to exercise independent judgment, build trust, and interact confidently with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including experience leading multifaceted processes or projects and coaching team members.
  • Proficient in legal and compliance research tools (e.g., Westlaw, Oden).
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Alignment with company mission and core values, demonstrating integrity and ethical decision-making.


Over and above
  • CPCU or other advanced insurance certification.
  • Experience as a regulator within the insurance industry.
  • Experience at a law firm specializing in insurance regulatory matters.
  • Prior experience with regulatory reporting obligations including regulatory filings and/or holding company act filings.


Other things to note
  • This position is open to U.S. remote work. However, team members who reside within 20 miles of the Traverse City headquarters will follow a hybrid schedule, working from the office three days per week.
  • Familiarity with public company requirements, including Sarbanes Oxley and key regulations, if applicable. For SOX compliant roles, responsible for designing, executing, and documenting internal controls where they have been identified as owners to prevent errors in financial reporting, processes, and business operations. Including attestation to the completeness, accuracy, and compliance of all financial reporting data, where applicable.
