LOCATION: KONA COMMUNITY HOSPITAL | Ambulatory Clinic

POSITION STATUS: 1.00 | Permanent

SALARY RANGE: BU09 | SR22

SALARY RATE: $125,400.00 (Annual Salary) based on the FTE

JOB DUTIES: The Kona Health department's ambulatory clinic programs collectively deliver preventive, diagnostic, procedural, chronic disease management, and specialty care across the West Hawaii community. The clinic programs under this position's supervisory scope include:

  • Pediatrics - well-child visits, immunizations, acute illness, developmental screening, and chronic disease management in pediatric populations.
  • Primary Care - adult health maintenance, chronic disease management (diabetes, hypertension, COPD), preventive screenings, and acute care.
  • Obstetrics/Gynecology (OB/GYN) - prenatal care, annual GYN exams, colposcopy, family planning, and postpartum follow-up.
  • Cardiology - EKG acquisition and interpretation support, cardiac monitoring, medication management, and pre/post-procedural care for cardiac patients.
  • General Surgery - pre-operative assessment, wound care, post-operative follow-up, and minor in-clinic procedures.
  • Orthopedics - musculoskeletal assessment support, joint injection assistance, splinting/casting, and post-surgical rehabilitation coordination.
  • Gastroenterology (GI) - patient preparation and follow-up for GI procedures, stool-based screening coordination, and chronic GI disease management.
  • Urology - ambulatory diagnostic and procedural support including cystoscopy, urodynamics, catheter management, and post-urologic surgical follow-up.
  • Infectious disease control


The Registered Professional Nurse IV (Assistant Manager, Ambulatory Clinic) is responsible for the supervisory oversight of daily clinical operations within Kona Health department's ambulatory clinic environment. The clinical operations scope of this position may encompass one or more of the following specialty and primary care areas: Pediatrics, Primary Care, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Cardiology, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Gastroenterology (GI), and Urology, etc... or as assigned based on operational need and clinic configuration.

This position establishes and enforces clinical practice standards, leads staff development and competency programs, ensures regulatory compliance, and serves as the primary nursing leadership resource for clinic physicians, advanced practice providers, and clinic management. This position works primarily during clinic hours, Monday through Friday, with occasional flexibility required to accommodate operational or clinical needs.

THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated; the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week.

EDUCATION: Graduated from an accredited school of nursing. A Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred but not required.

EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have shown progressively responsible work experience of the kind and quality described below:
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: A minimum of one and a half (1 1/2) years of professional nursing work experience is required, with at least one (1) year in an ambulatory, clinic-based, or outpatient specialty setting. Prior supervisory or lead nursing experience is required. Experience working across multiple specialty areas in an ambulatory environment is highly desirable.
SUPERVISORY APTITUDE: For Registered Professional Nurse IV and above, must have demonstrated supervisory aptitude - defined as the demonstrated potential and/or documented experience in performing supervisory or lead duties through prior charge nurse, team-lead, or clinic supervisor assignments, supervisory training completion, or favorable supervisor appraisals indicating supervisory readiness.

LICENSE REQUIRED: Possession of a current license to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawaii.

CERTIFICATION: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Health Care Worker required at time of appointment.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Knowledge of nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and development in nursing; biological, physical, social and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures. Knowledge of JCAHO requirements, and those of other federal, state, or private regulatory/review organizations with which the hospital interacts. Ability to plan and schedule the work of others and utilize the principles and practices of supervision. The ability to apply nursing theory and practice in planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret and evaluate symptoms of patient's condition; and take appropriate action. The position should be able to initiate and maintain working relationships with members of the medical staff, administration, nursing and other departments and agencies affiliated with the hospital.
