Description:

Medical/Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) - Full-Time, Variable ShiftsShift Details
  • Full-Time: 3x12-hour shifts per week
  • Day or night shift, scheduled as needed
  • Every other weekend (EOW) required
  • Holiday shifts required
  • 2 on-call shifts per 4-week period
  • Extended contracts through holidays required
Position Overview
  • The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high quality compassionate care to patients and families
  • Assesses patient need, develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates care delivery throughout the patient's episode
  • Develops specialized skill in the area of patients admitted for medical conditions
  • Provides care to adult, adolescent, and geriatric populations with medical conditions
  • Accountable for patient and family education to assist in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization, including lifestyle changes to support health and healing
  • Expected to promote comfort and provide emotional support in a Healing Environment
  • Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens is reasonably anticipated; required tasks involve potential contact with blood, body fluids, and tissues

  • Applies nursing knowledge and skill in the delivery of care
  • Demonstrates skill in application of interventions, including medication administration
Assessment & Care Planning
  • Assesses patient and family needs through active listening, social perceptiveness, and analyzing data or information obtained through direct observation/assessment, technology, or health team communication
  • Creates a developmentally and age-appropriate, culturally relevant, individualized plan of care to address the nature and scope of health problems identified
  • In collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and healthcare team members, sets goals and monitors the patient's progress
  • Adjusts the plan of care based on patient response or change in condition/reprioritization of needs
Advocacy & Teamwork
  • Promotes, advocates for, and protects the health, safety, and rights of the patient
  • Encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to accomplish the best possible patient outcome
  • Teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks and interventions consistent with the individual's education, training, and scope of practice
  • Understands the personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies
Patient & Family Education
  • Motivates the patient and family by teaching them what is needed to continue care and healing at home
  • Assesses patient and family learning styles and structures sessions to maximize understanding
  • Seeks "teachable" moments during the care delivery process to emphasize pertinent information
  • Asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in the self-care process
  • Provides tools and information to assist the patient's family after discharge
  • Documents the education provided and the patient and family response to the education
Quality Improvement & Professional Development
  • Systematically evaluates quality and effectiveness of nursing practice
  • Uses results of quality improvement activities to initiate changes in individual nursing practice and care delivery
  • Engages in self-evaluation of practice, identifying strengths and areas in which professional development would be beneficial

Required Credentials & Experience
  • New York State (NYS) RN Licensure
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) only

  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse in a Medical/Surgical environment
