Registered Nurse - University Student Health ServicesShift Details
- Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
- Shift Type: 5x8
- Location: Stony Brook, NY
- Minimum 1 year of experience required, preferably in occupational health
Vaccinations and Immunizations
- Administer a full range of vaccines (MMR, meningitis, flu, HPV, Tdap, etc.)
- Track and maintain immunization records to ensure compliance with state and university requirements
- Conduct vaccine clinics, including mass immunization events, outreach campaigns, and follow-up for incomplete series
- Counsel students on vaccine benefits, side effects, and contraindications
Clinical Procedures and Testing
- Perform point-of-care testing (strep, flu, mono, urinalysis, pregnancy tests)
- Draw blood for lab work (phlebotomy) and collect specimens for STI screening
- Administer TB skin tests and read results
- Perform hormone therapy injections and other prescribed treatments
Triage and Direct Patient Care
- Perform comprehensive nursing triage (in-person and telephone) for acute and chronic conditions
- Conduct full nursing assessments, develop care plans, and provide care for minor illnesses and injuries independently
- Respond promptly to urgent or emergent needs, assess the situation, and escalate appropriately ("manage up") to the provider
- Provide care for minor injuries and acute illnesses (wound care, splinting, nebulizer treatments, vital signs, ECGs)
- Assess chronic conditions (diabetes, asthma, ADHD) and provide ongoing support as directed
Patient Communication and Follow-Up
- Call patients with normal lab results and communicate findings clearly
- Follow up with patients per provider request to check on progress or symptom changes
- Check students into the clinic and support flow of patient care
Case Coordination and Support
- Provide nursing support for students with complex or chronic health needs (e.g., diabetes, severe allergies, mental health issues)
- Coordinate patient referrals to specialists, on-campus counseling, and external medical facilities
- Work closely with providers to deliver comprehensive, team-based care
Medication Administration and Monitoring
- Administer prescribed medications (oral, IM, SC, intradermal)
- Monitor for adverse reactions and provide patient education on medication use
- Handle medication inventory and maintain cold chain for vaccines
Health Education, Compliance, and Public Health
- Educate students on communicable disease prevention, self-care, and health maintenance
- Participate in communicable disease surveillance, state health reporting, and outbreak control (e.g., flu, measles, meningitis)
- Maintain accurate, detailed, and confidential electronic health records (EHRs)
- Adhere to all federal and state regulations, including HIPAA (privacy) and FERPA (student records)
