Medical/Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) - Contract PositionContract Details
  • 22 to 26-week contract with a flexible end date, but must run through the holiday season
  • Full-time, 36 hours per week
  • 3x12-hour shifts, day/night variable (scheduled as needed)
  • Every other weekend (EOW) required
  • Holiday shifts required
  • 2 on-call shifts per 4-week period
Required Credentials & Experience
  • Active New York State (NYS) RN Licensure required
  • BLS certification required (AHA or RQI only)
  • ACLS certification required (AHA or RQI only)
  • NIHSS certification required
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical/Surgical experience as a Registered Nurse required
Position Overview
  • The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high-quality, compassionate care to patients and families
  • Assesses patient need, develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates care delivery throughout the patient's episode
  • Provides specialized care to patients admitted for medical conditions, serving adult, adolescent, and geriatric populations
  • Accountable for patient and family education to assist in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization, including lifestyle changes to support health and healing
  • Expected to promote comfort and provide emotional support within a Healing Environment
  • Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens is reasonably anticipated; required tasks involve potential contact with blood, body fluids, and tissues
Job FunctionsClinical Practice
  • Applies nursing knowledge and skill in the delivery of care
  • Assesses patient and family needs through active listening, social perceptiveness, and analyzing data or information obtained through direct observation/assessment, technology, or health team communication
  • Creates a developmentally and age-appropriate, culturally relevant, individualized plan of care to address the nature and scope of identified health problems
  • In collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and healthcare team members, sets goals and monitors patient progress
  • Adjusts the plan of care based on patient response or change in condition/reprioritization of needs
  • Demonstrates skill in the application of interventions, including medication administration
Advocacy & Teamwork
  • Promotes, advocates for, and protects the health, safety, and rights of the patient
  • Encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to accomplish the best possible patient outcome
  • Teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks and interventions consistent with the individual's education, training, and scope of practice
  • Understands the personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies
Patient & Family Education
  • Motivates the patient and family by teaching them what is needed to continue care and healing at home
  • Assesses the patient and family learning styles and structures sessions to maximize understanding
  • Seeks teachable moments during the care delivery process to emphasize pertinent information
  • Asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in the self-care process
  • Provides tools and information to assist the patient's family after discharge
  • Documents the education provided and the patient/family response to the education
Quality & Professional Development
  • Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice
  • Uses the results of quality improvement activities to initiate changes in individual nursing practice and care delivery
  • Engages in self-evaluation of practice, identifying strengths and areas in which professional development would be beneficial
  • Takes accountability to increase knowledge and enhance skill
  • Uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
