Unit Summary

The Neuroscience and Trauma program on 7 West provides inpatient neurosurgical expertise for individuals who suffer from acute intracranial hemorrhages, traumatic brain injuries, and brain tumors. The unit provides high quality, specialized care in a fast paced environment, with 23 tertiary beds, 7 level II critical care stepdown beds with cardiac and invasive monitoring capability, and a designated room for moderate sedation procedures. The SDU accommodates neurosurgical patients from our LHIN and neuro-compromised patients 'stepping up' from the ward or 'stepping down' from ICU.

Position Summary

As a member of the healthcare team, the Registered Nurse coordinates, evaluates and provides nursing care according to the job description and Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses on 7W.

Qualifications

1. Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nursing of Ontario as a Registered Nurse 2. Recent experience (within the last 3 years) in neurosurgical nursing or critical care nursing 3. Current BCLS certification or equivalent 4. Demonstrated skill and ability with ECG interpretation/intervention, arterial-line monitoring, VAT competency, CVAD competency, ICP setup/ monitoring, BIPAP, assisting with invasive procedures, and vasoactive IV medications preferred 5. CPO or SDU course through Hamilton Health Sciences preferred 6. Demonstrate critical thinking and decision making in neuroassessment, problem identification and problem-solving of neurosurgical and neurology patients 7. Ability to prioritize and collaborate with the team with patient condition fluctuations 8. Evidence of commitment to professional practice and ongoing professional development 9. Demonstrate knowledge of the nursing care planning process 10. Strong organizational and time management skill
