Salary Range: $135,000 - $165,000/annumThe Opportunity:The Lab Supervisor is responsible for managing a team of laboratory technicians, ensuring adequate laboratory capability to meet business, customer, and regulatory needs, and ensuring consistent quality of laboratory data is provided to stakeholders.
Responsibilities:- Lead efforts to ensure the health and safety of personnel working in the Refinery Lab.
- Manage and supervise the team of represented Lab Technicians, including stewarding the application of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and issuing corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with QA/QC standards required by applicable regulations and customer requirements.
- Ensure the accuracy, quality, and timeliness of laboratory analysis and the effectiveness of services provided to customers and stakeholders.
- Manage all aspects of laboratory staffing and facilitate the selection process for permanent hires, students, and temporary contract personnel.
- Manage and facilitate laboratory equipment reliability, replacement, and upgrade activities.
- Participate in industry networks, as appropriate, to ensure compliance with current standards and regulations, including ASTM and CGSB.
- Serve as the laboratory interface with internal refinery stakeholders, including Operations, Supply, Technical, and IT teams, as well as external auditors.
- Serve as the laboratory interface for department-specific change management initiatives, including changes to work processes and laboratory software.
- Act as the overarching owner of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring procedures are maintained through a review process and employees remain current.
- Prepare and submit annual diesel and fuel sulfur compliance reports as required by governing regulations.
Education:- Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline, or Diploma in Chemical Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, or a related field, or Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Chemical, Process, or related discipline)
- An equivalent combination of education and relevant laboratory experience may also be considered.
Requirements:- Minimum 8 years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to health and safety, with a proven track record of prioritizing safety in previous roles.
- Ability to lead initiatives through mentoring and coaching within a unionized environment.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and support a positive, inclusive, and respectful workplace.
- Able to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and written.
- Well organized, with experience planning and conducting meetings, maintaining records and files, and documenting plans and processes.
- Effective time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- Technical knowledge of laboratory equipment, procedures, and product properties is considered an asset. Candidates who do not currently possess this knowledge but have the appropriate technical skills and educational background to learn it quickly will also be considered.
