The Opportunity

Our Calgary-based Rates & Services West team plays an integral role supporting TC Energy's Commercial objectives. In this fast-paced position, you will gain knowledge of the Canada Gas Commercial business by assisting in the development and pricing of transportation services for our wholly-owned pipeline systems in western Canada.

We are seeking a motivated Rates Analyst with knowledge and experience in analytical and financial modeling. The successful candidate will also demonstrate the ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships to achieve business results. This individual has the proven skills, competencies and capacity to learn the rate-regulated pipeline transmission business and commercial framework to help optimize our assets.

Reporting to the Manager, Rates & Services West, this position provides analytical and project support for transportation rate calculations, forecasting, and commercial and financial initiatives related to the NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. (NGTL) and Foothills pipeline systems. Working collaboratively with team members and business partners, the role contributes to the achievement of Canada Gas Commercial objectives through data-driven insights and operational support.

What you'll do

  • Become a subject matter expert in the Canada Gas regulated business model
  • Independently perform cost of service, rates calculations and service analysis
  • Develop and maintain toll design, cost of service and pipeline financial models
  • Support the overall Commercial team in optimization and competitiveness initiatives
  • Support the Rates team in the development of rate design and transportation services
  • Work closely with internal partners to understand project requests and/or analysis and to validate and refine modeling assumptions and results
  • Assist in the monthly maintenance of the Rates database, and develop analytics-based enhancements as required
  • Be a champion for continuous process improvement through the development & maintenance of analytics solutions, including data gathering, visualization and automation of recurring tasks
  • Prepare reports and present analysis (including assumptions, methodology, impacts and overall results) to senior leadership
  • Effectively operate in a growing and changing environment under tight deadlines
  • Provide support for regulatory filings and industry committee initiatives
  • Other tasks as required


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Economics, Commerce/Business or related field
  • Minimum 4 years of related and progressive industry/business experience
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered


Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of revenue / cost modeling and economic evaluations
  • Demonstrated experience working with complex financial/economic models
  • Proficient in full suite of Microsoft Office products, with strong Microsoft Excel modeling abilities in particular. This includes the ability to manipulate large volumes of data, efficiently manage model enhancements for scenario analysis and effectively maintain and improve spreadsheet models relevant to the current business environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to work effectively, both independently and in teams, and to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships
  • Knowledge of Power BI and management information systems to support the Rates database
  • Detail-oriented with strong time management, planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis, with a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality
  • Self-starter with a proactive approach to problem identification and solution recommendations
  • Experience using data, analytics, or AI-enabled tools to improve efficiency, consistency, or transparency of analysis (e.g. automation, data preparation and/or visualization, or research synthesis)
  • Familiarity with the regulated pipeline model, including regulatory processes and rate design concepts
  • Exposure to accounting concepts such as depreciation; and with an understanding of fundamental principles of finance and/or economics and their applications to business situations
