Overview

The Candu Radiation Protection Director manages the radiation protection functional discipline for the Candu Business Unit. This includes the management of:

  • Health Physics support to Candu retube projects conducted both nationally and internationally.
  • Radiation protection of our Candu Field Services team providing inspection and testing of client Candu reactors both nationally and internationally.
  • Radiation protection in our CNSC licensed facilities.
  • Radiation protection in new Candu related work.

The specific responsibilities includes management of:

  • Support for bids for Candu projects to ensure that radiation protection is adequately addressed and to appropriately scope radiation protection services when required.
  • Hiring, developing and training of health physics and radiation protection staff.
  • The development, maintenance and implementation of the Radiation Protection, Radioactive Waste Management, Environment and Transport of Radioactive Materials Programs associated with the CNSC license.
  • The development, maintenance and implementation of standards of radiation protection applicable to projects and the conduct of work at client sites.
  • Radiation protection support to Candu projects, in conjunction with Candu project management and our clients, such that Candu staff are adequately protected, all Candu’s legal responsibilities and due diligence requirements are fulfilled across the various jurisdictions in which we work and project needs are met.
  • The development of reports and metrics related to RP performance and reporting to projects and senior management as appropriate.
  • OPEX gathering and sharing to ensure our business is continually learning from both internal and external experience and that our RP standards reflect the best in industry.
  • Oversight activities to ensure effective RP performance.

About you

  • Undergraduate degree in Health Physics or equivalent.
  • Experience in dealing with a large organization to address broad scope radiation safety needs.
  • Experience in applying high radiation safety standards expected in nuclear power plants.
  • Demonstrated 10+ years’ experience in managing and supervising radiation protection staff in a leadership role.
  • Experience in national and international radioactive material shipment is considered an asset.
  • Experience in managing international clients is considered an asset.
  • Good working knowledge of Canadian radiation protection, radioactive waste management and transport of radioactive materials legislation.
  • Ability to effectively address worker radiation safety concerns by explaining program application requirements and safety principles.
  • Ability to support and manage a positive working environment for the team and relevant stakeholders.
  • Ability to expand a strong team through recruiting, interviewing, and/or selecting staff with the appropriate skills and establishing training and development to support project execution.
  • Ability to uphold high radiation protection standards in a commercial environment.
  • Excellent organizational, oral and written communication, and customer relationship skills.
  • Effective communication of radiation safety compliance requirements to the organization.
