As an R&D Engineer Optical, you will join a collaborative R&D team in Andover, MA, contributing to the design and development of optical systems that help improve patient outcomes around the world. What will you be doing?- Supporting the design and analysis of optical components and subsystems including lenses, illumination systems, imaging systems and fiber optics
- Performing optical modeling, simulation and tolerance analysis using industry standard tools
- Assisting with laboratory setup, optical alignment and characterization of prototypes
- Conducting optical performance testing and analyzing results to support design decisions
- Collaborating with mechanical, electrical and systems engineers to integrate optical elements into complete medical device systems
- Participating in design reviews, risk assessments and verification and validation activities
- Supporting documentation and quality activities in line with FDA, ISO 13485 and internal quality processes
What will you need to be successful?- Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics or Mechanical Engineering with an optomechanical focus
- 0 to 3 years of relevant engineering experience, including academic projects or internships
- Fundamental understanding of geometrical optics, illumination and introductory lens design
- Exposure to optical simulation tools and hands on laboratory experience
- Strong analytical, problem solving and communication skills
The anticipated base compensation range for this position is $85,750 - $128,750 USD annually.
The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role at Smith + Nephew. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
