About The Role:

New Bern Mill is a vital part of Global Cellulose Fibers Pulp Business. We produce fluff pulp used in the production of diapers and other absorbent personal care products. The Quality Manager monitors for deliverables to be compliant with required standards; oversees collection, measuring, analysis, and reporting of program performance metrics. Coordinates with program & operations management positions to identify and implement corrective actions as appropriate; supports, documents, and validates process improvement initiatives. Serve as management representative for New Bern Mill ISO 9001 certification. The position reports to the Product Performance Manager.
  • Train personnel on related tools and fixtures, record management, and inspection / test protocol. Perform inspection activities as required to supplement facility staffing levels; review operations and quality personnel inspection results.
  • Leader of the Quality Support Team ensuring team members' relations, efforts and processes are in place to maximize team member engagement and results.
  • Provide assistance to operations in their development of root-cause analysis and corrective/preventative actions implemented to address non-conformances from external customer complaints. Assist in internal product disposition, investigation, and internal response.
  • Works with operations ensuring non-conforming product is properly identified, segregated, reviewed, and disposed in accordance with product grade requirements.
  • Maintain or supports all calibration records of precision test equipment and support tools.
  • Works with operations to ensure quality-related procedures and processes are in place and sustained.
  • Coordinate internal and external test lab requirements.
  • In conjunction with the Product Performance Manager:
  • Evaluates incoming customer complaints on damaged product; completes customer external disposition reports as required and manages the quarantine and cull area.
  • Understands customer requirements and how it is managed via Product Grade Specifications
  • Understands and supports internal and external customer requirements.
  • Works closely with GCF corporate support including Innovation Center, Global Quality Resources and Subject Matter Experts on GCF system-wide quality continuous improvement programs,
  • Coordinate Quality Training (High Risk & Product Safety) for team members, new hires, new roles, supporting quality, and contractors.
  • Support Quality Action reporting metrics; provide data for tracking metrics - typical metrics include, but not limited to, internal defect recording and mitigation, scorecards, KPIs, pest control trending data, & other facility base measure (s) and supplier performance.
  • Assist and coordinate with Operations and Maintenance in their development of root-cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions implemented to address non-conformances both internal and external (customer complaints).
  • Participate in internal and external design reviews / customer product trials / qualification and equipment installation qualification, providing input on definition of product sufficient to allow inspection and prior production / field issues pertinent to the configuration under review opportunities for improvement and optimization based on failure analysis outcomes.
  • Site coordinator for Quality Observations, Quality Learning Events, and Pest Control program.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time, and provide support to the mill outside normal business hours, including nights and weekends, with a support system capable of meeting customer needs 24/7.
  • Serve as Management Representative for New Bern Mill- ISO 9001 certification

  • Coordinate ISO 9001 Mill External and Internal Audits
  • Work with Business Units Managers, Area Process Managers, Maintenance, and Engineering to identify and sustain Internal and External Audit Processes throughout the year
  • Lead and facilitates all quality activities, but not limited to quality weekly meetings, quarterly quality crew meetings, quarterly EMS/QMS, and management review with Leadership


About You: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • BS degree in engineering; in an applied science, engineering field, or similar degree.
  • Five (5)+ years of Quality Assurance experience or 7-10 years of paper mill production or paper mill process engineering
  • Experience in the pulp and paper industry is preferred but not required
  • Excellent leadership skills, managerial or supervisory experience a plus
  • Proven commitment to safety and safety processes
  • ISO working knowledge with internal audit leadership experience
  • Quality Engineering background with experience in Root Cause and Corrective / Preventative Action, structured problem solving and risk mitigation methods.
  • Demonstrated exceptional written, oral communication, and meeting facilitation skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • General knowledge of basic statistical quality control (SQC).
  • Strong project management skills with high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proficient with Omega and site coordinator for Proficy and other critical business software for quality. (quality management systems).
  • Prior experience in quality assurance and quality management systems for product manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated experience as primary communication interface with contractors, manufacturing leaders, and suppliers, including internal and external customers.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining safety initiatives.
  • Change Management experience
  • Experience working in a High Performance Work Systems.
  • Leadership experience working in a quality focused environment
  • Knowledge of and leadership in papermill safety practices.
