Full Job Description
Amazon Robotics Delivery and Packaging Innovation (RDPI) Global Engineering Hardware team is seeking an experienced Quality Assurance Engineer II to join our Hardware Test Engineering team. This team operates in a multi-disciplinary environment of hardware engineers, controls engineers, and test engineers dedicated to advancing sustainable packaging automation and robotics technologies that fulfill millions of customer orders every day.

The Quality Assurance Engineer II is a significant and autonomous contributor who delivers high-quality test solutions, applying appropriate test methodologies and QA best practices. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to create, execute, and optimize test plans for system-level functional verification testing (L1) scenarios throughout the product development process (PDP) and product lifecycle - including scenarios that may involve multiple engineering teams and where test plan requirements may not yet be defined. You will be responsible for designing reusable and reliable test solutions, defining test requirements, mitigating quality risks, mentoring junior QAEs, and driving continuous improvement of test processes and automation.

These system-level processes integrate sensors, actuators, mechanisms, controls, computer, electrical, and human interactions to deliver systems that meet and exceed customer, safety, regulatory, and business requirements. This is done through the execution and optimization of test plans, design of reusable test solutions, documentation of test results, defect management and root cause analysis, automation of data collection and analysis, and presenting results, feedback, and recommendations to cross-functional teams and stakeholders.

Key job responsibilities

- Create, execute, and optimize comprehensive test plans for difficult system-level functional verification (L1) scenarios involving multiple engineering teams and product components - including scenarios where test plan requirements may not yet be defined

- Design reusable, reliable, and efficient test solutions (scripts, tools, automation) that minimize hardware resource usage and execution time

- Assess the testability of product components and features (instrumentation, modularity, APIs) and identify salient test cases with traceability to use cases

- Develop test plans that include non-functional areas (e.g., performance, load, scalability, usability)

- Define test requirements, clear blockers, and escalate appropriately; mitigate quality risks proactively

- Work to discover defects early and prevent them from occurring; drive analysis of post-release quality and defect escapes, propose solutions, and implement improvements

- Identify root causes of product quality problems and isolate the smallest set of steps to reproduce issues

- Write test scripts and automated test cases that provide effective end-to-end coverage; ensure automation is reliable, reusable, and considers legacy impact

- Optimize test plans, automated solutions, and QA metrics to improve team efficiency, product quality, and launch/time to production

- Work with team owners to ensure code, components, and features are tested at the appropriate level (unit, integration/functional, UI), reducing unnecessary test cases that lead to intermittent issues or increased execution time

- Actively participate in design discussions, planning, retrospective reviews, bug triage, and prioritization processes

- Establish a quality bar in collaboration with your team and project teams; measure quality quantitatively against defined KPIs

- Mentor and develop junior QAEs (QATs and QAE Is) - guide them on products, testing approaches, test solutions, and how they are constructed and used

- Help recruit and interview for the team

- Clearly document work for future generations of testers; maintain and expand lab infrastructure as needed

- Travel to Amazon fulfillment centers across North America to execute tests and collect data (75% travel required)

- Make trade-offs: own time available vs. test solution extent across concurrent test program

A day in the life

As a Quality Assurance Engineer II on the RDPI team, you'll spend your days as an individual contributor solving difficult test challenges in lab environments and at fulfillment centers across North America. You might start your morning optimizing a test plan for a complex packaging system deployment that involves coordination across hardware, controls, and operations engineering teams - defining test requirements that haven't been fully scoped yet. Mid-morning, you could be designing a reusable automated test solution that reduces manual execution time by 50%, ensuring it's efficient in both hardware resource usage and execution time. In the afternoon, you might lead a design discussion with cross-functional partners to assess the testability of a new feature, then mentor a QAE I on how to structure their test cases for better coverage. You'll drive post-release defect escape analysis, propose root cause solutions, and present quality metrics and recommendations to stakeholders. Throughout the day, you're balancing tactical test execution with strategic improvements to the team's test processes, automation, and quality metrics.
