DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Director, manage shop operations through staffing open hours (alternating shifts with the Director and other staff).

Serve as primary point-person on a variety of questions, concerns and issues. Provide expert technical advice to shop users and serve as a mentor for makerspace participants in several areas of 'making', such as 3D printing, laser cutting, 2D and 3D CAD and CAM, electronics circuit design and embedded systems, manual and CNC machining, MIG and TIG welding, woodworking, composites and/or sewing.

Perform recharge/financial support, as required. Supervise undergraduate staff and volunteers, advise and mentor shop users, perform safety training, and onboard new users. Create educational, promotional, and news content. Provide operational support towards starting up, running, and continuously improving makerspace service. Perform other duties within the scope of the description.

~ Makerspace staff will divide these hours evenly, e.g. through staggered Sunday-Thursday and Tuesday-Saturday schedules.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with engineering principles and methods to independently perform the full range of engineering professional design work.
  • Strong proven knowledge of 3D printing, laser cutting, 2D and 3D CAD and CAM, electronics circuit design and embedded systems, manual and CNC machining, MIG and TIG welding, woodworking, and composites.
  • Experience in managing a lab facility, including knowledge of project management, staff management, safety requirements and recharge/financial support to keep the facility operating smoothly.
  • Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.
  • Demonstrated experience with laboratory safety, including a knowledge of mechanical, electrical, mechanical and/or chemical safety procedures.
  • Experience in facilitative design and fabrication, working with minimal guidelines, conceptual ideas, rough sketches or oral information about basic design where specific details are developed as fabrication progresses.
  • Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines and adherence to quality standards.
  • Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions.
  • Ability to lead and influence others.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Some evening and weekend hours will be required.
