Departmental Overview

Campus Applications & Data, a unit within the Office of the Chief Information Officer, provides application systems development and best practices for enterprise and unit-specific software supporting administrative, academic, and public service functions.

Within this unit, the Student Integrated System (SIS) team is responsible for designing, configuring, testing, and maintaining software applications that support key campus functions, including admissions, enrollment, registration, financial aid, student accounts, advising, and the student portal. The team focuses on system improvements as well as automation & performance testing to better meet the needs of the campus community.

Position Summary

The QA Release Management Analyst 3 serves as an experienced Quality Assurance analyst within the Student Integrated System (SIS) team. This position aligns quality assurance initiatives and testing standards with institutional priorities and SIS development cycles to safeguard data integrity, system reliability, and service excellence for the campus community.

This position is responsible for developing, executing, troubleshooting, and maintaining both automated and manual tests, as well as evaluating, revising, applying, and documenting technical quality assurance protocols and methods to inspect and validate a variety of IT processes, programs, and products. This role also prepares for, supports, and implements performance testing each release period, providing analysis and suggestions for system performance improvements. Additionally, the QA Release Management Analyst 3 performs analysis to identify trends and suggests corrective actions, supports compliance with UC and external quality assurance standards, and provides consultation and guidance to Berkeley IT teams in improving their quality assurance practices and automated testing capabilities.

Responsibilities

Quality Assurance & Performance Testing - 75%

• Applies advanced quality assurance (QA) concepts to perform complex testing procedures, ensuring that all information systems products and services meet organizational standards and end-user requirements.
• Analyzes, develops, and conducts complex software testing to verify proper system operation, identifying and reporting any defects. Executes regression and validation testing to assess the impact of new code changes on existing functionality. Re-tests resolved issues to verify corrections and surface any newly introduced defects.
• Collaborates with business analysts, developers, infrastructure & database teams, security analysts, and UX analysts to analyze, define, develop, and validate the functionality and expected outcomes of complex test plans via if-then and other test-driven script development as well as performance testing.
• Analyzes, designs, builds, and maintains complex automated test scripts, test plans, and test execution plans. Evaluates automation tools, contributes to tool selection and installation, and supports the establishment of testing standards for automation. Executes complex automated test scripts as part of ongoing QA efforts.
• Performs complex analysis of failed scripts and works directly with developers and functional teams to identify root causes and resolve issues.
• Employs complex tools to perform workflow analysis and recommends quality improvements to enhance system performance and reliability. Recommends and implements improvements to procedures and develops models of possible future configurations.
• Guides migration of new and upgraded software from test to production environment. Analyzes requests for new software upgrades or enhancements. Administers release engineering tools.
• Performs system performance testing, troubleshoots and interprets results, and recommends improvements where appropriate.
• Provides consultation and support to IT teams to help establish or strengthen their QA processes and automated testing capabilities, as appropriate.
• Creates and maintains testing libraries in support of the software development process and life cycle.

Leadership, Standards and Communication - 15%

• Engages with internal management, developers (both internal and external), business analysts, and partner offices as appropriate.
• Acts as information resource about assigned areas to technical writers and other Quality Assurance Analysts.
• Leads the identification, documentation, and resolution of complex issues discovered during automated testing.
• Documents and reports on all testing activities, both automated and manual, including the design, implementation, troubleshooting, and resolution of issues related to new or existing automated tests. Prepares and maintains timelines and progress reports to keep departmental leadership informed of testing status, results, and known issues.
• Recommends and implements improvements to automated and performance testing procedures and helps develop models to explore future system configurations.
• Employs project life cycle and industry practices, community standards and department policies and procedures on project assignments.
• Stays current with emerging testing tools, technologies, and industry standards. Serves as a technical lead for the unit in the development of new QA standards and guidelines.
• Works independently and provides actionable recommendations to managers, directors, and senior stakeholders, leveraging technical expertise.
• Communicates complex technical concepts clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, to diverse audiences.
• Demonstrates the organization's core values of excellence, innovation, and integrity.
• Serves as leader within the department for small to medium QA efforts, from project proposal phase through completion, planning, testing, migrations, documentation, production and customer support, as appropriate.

Required Qualifications

• Thorough knowledge of software systems and applications, including their design, business functions, data flows, and technical dependencies.
• In-depth understanding of application design and architecture, with the analytical skills necessary to evaluate software designs, modifications, implementations, and systems, and develop test scripts as needed.
• In-depth understanding of knowledge of the principles, application, and implementation of User-Story creation, Test-Driven Development, automated testing tools, and software testing. This includes in-depth skills to perform software testing, automated QA procedures, and performance testing.
• In-depth skills associated with object-oriented programming design, including analysis, drafting, testing, modification, and implementation.
• Interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
• Self-motivated, ability to learn quickly, meet deadlines, work independently and as part of a team and demonstrate problem-solving skills.
• Thorough knowledge of other areas of IT. Knowledge of department processes and procedures.
• Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

• Understands compliance requirements for applicable industry or agency standards. Knowledge of the ISO standards and the Compatibility Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) model.
• Skills in software lifecycle management.
• Familiarity with Visual Studio Code tool.
• Familiarity with Ruby on Rails programming and/or Cucumber framework.
• Experience with Oracle's PeopleSoft Testing Framework.
• Experience with Oracle's Campus Solutions product.
• Experience with UC Berkeley's student portal CalCentral.

Education / Training

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $94,300.00 - $130,000.00. The full pay scale for this classification is $94,300 to $173,900.
