About the Role, Mission or Department Overview

The Quality Engineering team at The New York Times is hiring a QA Engineer. You will work with software engineers, DevOps, product managers, and designers to support quality across our web, mobile, and API platforms.

As an embedded Quality Partner, you will collaborate directly with Product Engineering to guide our weekly release schedule without sacrificing excellence. You will influence quality-providing proactive feedback during feature kickoffs, aligning with our offshore QA team to maximize test coverage, and creating test cases and automation scripts to eliminate blind spots.

This role is hybrid and based in New York City, with an expectation of two days per week in the office. You will report to the Senior QA Manager.

We are looking for a QA Engineer-a creative builder who can bridge the gap between QA, DevOps, and engineering excellence. This role is ideal for a mid-level engineer who excels at solving hard problems. The engineer should also automate everything and use modern AI-assisted development tools, such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Claude. These tools accelerate testing and deployment workflows.

Responsibilities:
  • Be a Quality Partner to the product engineering teams, guiding them on test requirements, testing needs, and uncovering nuanced edge cases.
  • Work with the offshore QA team for testing coverage and support.
  • Assess, fix, and write both manual and automated tests that directly correspond to the features developed by the team you support.
  • Create scalable test environments and tools that accelerate release velocity and improve reliability.
  • Partner with development, DevOps, and product teams to define test strategy and ensure quality from brainstorming through deployment.
  • Apply observability and analytics to quality engineering - integrating logs, metrics, and telemetry to surface product insights.
  • Help evolve best practices for TestOps, automation design, and AI-assisted development.

Basic Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of experience in test automation, TestOps, or software engineering.
  • Proficiency in Python, with experience writing maintainable automation code and custom test frameworks.
  • Experience with Selenium and Appium, and familiarity with backend testing (REST/gRPC/GraphQL APIs).
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Competence with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and test environment provisioning.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted coding or automated test generation tools (Cursor, Copilot, or Claude), and writing agentic rules/contexts.
  • The ability to identify gaps and propose sustainable automation solutions.
