Psychiatrist, Reproductive Mental Health and Substance Use

Department of Psychiatry, Consultation

BC Women's Hospital

Vancouver, BC Canada

BC Women's Hospital is seeking a psychiatrist with experience working with women struggling with mental health and substance use challenges in the pre-, peri- and postnatal periods. This position will be part of a staffing expansion in the site-wide multidisciplinary consultation service providing subspecialty care to women with acute mental health and substance use concerns at BC Women's Hospital. Psychiatric consultative support will be provided to all inpatient units at BCWH, including the maternity Urgent Care Centre and the Families in Recovery (FIR) program.

As a consulting psychiatrist, you will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team assessing and treating mental health and substance use disorders, including management of intoxication, withdrawal and concurrent disorders for patients admitted to the FIR unit and to other programs at BC Women's Hospital. This position is part of an expanded program designed to better meet the needs of women in the perinatal period that require subspecialty mental health and substance use treatment. Consultants will provide comprehensive substance use and mental health assessments using trauma informed principles, assist in the development of treatment plans to provide evidence based care in hospital to reduce risk of patient-initiated discharges, and to help support community referrals. Indirect provider support may also be provided to professional community caregivers. Care is provided in-person, via virtual modalities, or a combination of both. The work is primarily clinical and is remunerated by a service contract. Previous experience in the care of women with mental health and/or substance use challenges, as well as with OAT prescribing, is desirable. BC Women's Hospital is an active teaching program and supervision of medical students, Ob/Gyn, Family Medicine and Psychiatry residents is expected.

As the successful candidate for this position, you will have demonstrated a commitment to academic and clinical excellence as well as patient- and family-centered care. You will have passed or be eligible for membership with Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or the Canadian College of Family Physicians (CCFP) and the College of Physician and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC). The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work successfully in a multidisciplinary team environment and will demonstrate a trauma informed approach in their clinical work and professional relationships.

Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Interested individuals should submit their most current CV; covering letter and the names, academic rank and contact information of 4 referees to:
