Full Job Description
JOB PURPOSE AND REPORTING STRUCTURE: Under the direction of the Director of Behavioral Health with consultation from the Lead Psychiatrist, the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing supportive psychotherapy and medication management to clinic patients in accordance with agency policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Perform comprehensive behavioral health assessments including evaluation, diagnosis (DSM), and treatment planning for all patients seen.
  • Provide supportive psychotherapy and motivational interviewing as needed; Teach and counsel patient's and family members regarding mental health diagnoses and treatment so that they can make informed decisions.
  • Order and interpret laboratory test and diagnostic studies and take appropriate follow-up steps if immediate attention is required.
  • Prescribe psychiatric medicine as necessary and appropriate in accordance with state and federal laws.
  • Evaluate for common and acute chronic conditions and refer to primary care provider for on-going treatment.
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists in establishing and reviewing drug and other medical guidelines. Review of guidelines will be done in a continuing manner but no less frequently than annually.
  • Provide consultation to behavioral health nursing staff in order to maintain effective nursing practices.
  • Ensure the completion of all required paperwork, records, and documentation.
  • Coordinate patient care by interacting with key providers within key departments including Primary Care, Family and Children, and Case Management Services.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality consistent with current HIPAA regulations and WI and Federal regulations regarding mental health and substance abuse treatment


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Requires a Masters in Nursing and a minimum of five to seven years of related experience; requires WI State License as an Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber and Board Certification as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
