Hitachi Energy is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Specialist - Proposals and Business Development to join our Grid Automation team in Raleigh, NC. In this role, you will be responsible for developing technical and commercial proposals for utility, renewable energy, industrial, and data center customers throughout North America. You will work closely with engineering, project management, sales, supply chain, legal, and leadership teams to create winning solutions that meet customer requirements while supporting Hitachi Energy's strategic growth objectives.
This position offers an exciting opportunity to combine technical knowledge, commercial insight, and project coordination skills while contributing directly to the success of high-profile power system automation projects.
How You'll Make an Impact
- Lead the preparation of technical and commercial proposals for Substation Automation, SCADA, RTU, Communication, Cybersecurity, and Digital Substation solutions.
- Review customer RFQs, specifications, contracts, and technical requirements to develop compliant and competitive proposals.
- Coordinate with engineering, operations, supply chain, legal, and project execution teams to define scope, pricing, schedules, and project risks.
- Develop proposal cost estimates, pricing models, commercial offers, and executive summaries.
- Prepare bid documentation, exceptions and clarifications, scope descriptions, assumptions, and risk assessments.
- Support contract negotiations and customer discussions during the proposal phase.
- Maintain proposal records, opportunity data, and supporting documentation within Salesforce and other business systems.
- Participate in customer meetings, bid reviews, and internal risk review processes.
- Support development of long-term service agreements, lifecycle management solutions, modernization projects, and strategic spare parts programs.
- Drive continuous improvement of proposal tools, templates, processes, and best practices.
- Collaborate with sales and business development teams to identify opportunities and develop winning strategies.
Your Background
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Business, Project Management, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in proposal development, estimating, sales support, project management, or contract administration.
- Experience within power systems, utility automation, SCADA, telecommunications, protection and control, or substation automation industries preferred.
- Understanding of commercial and contractual terms, including Incoterms, payment terms, warranties, and project risk management.
- Strong analytical skills with experience developing project cost estimates and pricing models.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present information clearly to customers and internal stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple pursuits simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Experience with CRM and ERP systems such as Salesforce, SAP, or similar platforms is preferred.
- Knowledge of utility industry standards, substation automation systems, cybersecurity solutions, or SCADA systems is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and analyze electrical single-line diagrams (SLDs), network architecture drawings, protection and control schematics, and communication diagrams.
- Experience developing complete Bills of Materials (BOMs) for Substation Automation, SCADA, RTU, Protection & Control, Communications, and Cybersecurity solutions.
- Ability to translate customer technical requirements into accurate system configurations, including servers, networking equipment, RTUs, HMIs, engineering workstations, time synchronization equipment, cybersecurity appliances, and associated software licenses.
- Strong understanding of utility substation architectures, IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, ICCP, and related communications protocols.
- Experience identifying scope gaps, technical risks, and assumptions during proposal development.
- Ability to work independently with limited engineering oversight while ensuring technical and commercial accuracy.
- Experience using engineering and configuration tools to develop equipment lists, network architectures, and project estimates.
- Knowledge of Hitachi Energy Grid Automation products, SEL, Cisco, Fortinet, Moxa, Dell, Meinberg, and similar utility automation product lines is highly desirable.
What Success Looks Like
- Receive customer specifications, SLDs, and network drawings and independently develop an accurate BOM and proposal scope.
- Identify missing information, clarify technical requirements, and proactively resolve scope ambiguities.
- Generate equipment configurations and pricing packages that require minimal rework from engineering teams.
- Support proposals ranging from small RTU upgrades to large multi-substation SCADA and Digital Substation projects.
