We are seeking an experienced Heat Trace Designer/Project Manager to manage/perform the design, estimating, procurement, coordination, and execution of commercial and industrial electric heat-tracing projects.
This position requires strong technical design ability combined with practical construction and project-management experience. The successful candidate will manage projects from initial review and proposal development through material procurement, field installation, testing, documentation, and final closeout.
Primary Responsibilities
Heat-Trace Design
- Review construction drawings, specifications, piping schedules, equipment data, and project requirements.
- Identify piping, vessels, equipment, and systems requiring electric heat tracing.
- Perform heat-loss calculations and select appropriate heating cable, controls, connection kits, and accessories.
- Design freeze-protection, process-temperature-maintenance, and snow-melting systems.
- Develop heat-trace circuit schedules, cable schedules, load summaries, bills of material, and installation details.
- Determine circuit lengths, power requirements, breaker sizes, control methods, and electrical distribution requirements.
- Prepare design drawings and heat-trace layouts using AutoCAD, AutoCAD Plant 3D, Bluebeam Revu, or similar software.
- Coordinate heat-trace designs with piping, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and instrumentation systems.
- Review manufacturer requirements and ensure designs comply with applicable codes, specifications, and project standards.
- Prepare design revisions, redlines, as-built drawings, and final turnover documentation.
Estimating and Proposal Development
- Review bid documents and define the complete project scope.
- Perform material and labor takeoffs for heat-trace installation projects.
- Develop lump-sum estimates covering engineering/design, materials, labor, equipment, supervision, testing, documentation, and subcontracted work.
- Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations.
- Identify and/or define project inclusions, exclusions, qualifications, assumptions, schedule risks, and potential scope gaps.
- Prepare professional proposals and scope-of-work documents.
