Full Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Heat Trace Designer/Project Manager to manage/perform the design, estimating, procurement, coordination, and execution of commercial and industrial electric heat-tracing projects.

This position requires strong technical design ability combined with practical construction and project-management experience. The successful candidate will manage projects from initial review and proposal development through material procurement, field installation, testing, documentation, and final closeout.

Primary Responsibilities

Heat-Trace Design

  • Review construction drawings, specifications, piping schedules, equipment data, and project requirements.
  • Identify piping, vessels, equipment, and systems requiring electric heat tracing.
  • Perform heat-loss calculations and select appropriate heating cable, controls, connection kits, and accessories.
  • Design freeze-protection, process-temperature-maintenance, and snow-melting systems.
  • Develop heat-trace circuit schedules, cable schedules, load summaries, bills of material, and installation details.
  • Determine circuit lengths, power requirements, breaker sizes, control methods, and electrical distribution requirements.
  • Prepare design drawings and heat-trace layouts using AutoCAD, AutoCAD Plant 3D, Bluebeam Revu, or similar software.
  • Coordinate heat-trace designs with piping, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and instrumentation systems.
  • Review manufacturer requirements and ensure designs comply with applicable codes, specifications, and project standards.
  • Prepare design revisions, redlines, as-built drawings, and final turnover documentation.

Estimating and Proposal Development

  • Review bid documents and define the complete project scope.
  • Perform material and labor takeoffs for heat-trace installation projects.
  • Develop lump-sum estimates covering engineering/design, materials, labor, equipment, supervision, testing, documentation, and subcontracted work.
  • Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations.
  • Identify and/or define project inclusions, exclusions, qualifications, assumptions, schedule risks, and potential scope gaps.
  • Prepare professional proposals and scope-of-work documents.
