Position Description

Reports To: Area Manager

Position Summary

The Project Manager - Major Projects is responsible for executing assigned large-scale heavy civil construction projects ($25 million and above in mission critical, energy, transportation and alternative delivery) from project handoff through final project completion. The Project Manager - Major Projects shall be responsible for delivering projects safely, on time, and within budget while emphasizing quality, proactive planning, operational excellence, and client satisfaction. Project Leadership & Execution: 60%

  • Create team management approach with Project Superintendent
  • Lead assigned major projects from handoff through closeout while ensuring safety, quality, schedule, and budget objectives are achieved.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for Owners, General Contractors, Engineers, Subcontractors, Vendors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Manage project execution in accordance with contract requirements, project specifications, company standards, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Develop project execution plans and establish project goals, milestones, and performance expectations.
  • Coordinate project startup activities, including bonds, insurance certificates, permits, and contractual requirements.
  • Manage Assistant Project Managers, Field Engineers, and QA/QC
  • Assist Project Superintendent with hiring for Field positions
  • Conduct Internal Kickoff Meetings, Preconstruction Meetings, Progress Meetings, Exit Strategy Meetings, and Post-Project Reviews.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships while ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Proactively identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies to protect project performance and profitability.
  • Keep Area Managers and executive leadership informed of project status, risks, opportunities, and critical issues.
  • Manage project procurement activities, including subcontractor procurement, purchase orders, and contract execution.
  • Administer owner contracts, subcontracts, and purchase agreements.
  • Manage payment applications, owner billings, subcontractor payments, and vendor invoices.
  • Maintain complete and organized project documentation, including RFIs, Submittals, Drawing Logs, Change Orders, Meeting Minutes, and Project Correspondence.
  • Prepare and provide accurate project status reports, cost forecasts, and cost-to-complete projections.
  • Manage project closeout activities including punch lists, turnover documentation, and final acceptance.


Scheduling

  • Develop and maintain baseline project schedules utilizing Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or similar scheduling software.
  • Coordinate procurement schedules, resource loading, and critical path activities.
  • Review schedules with Operations Leadership prior to client submission.
  • Update schedules regularly and communicate progress to stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement schedule recovery plans when necessary.
  • Coordinate short-term planning through regular review of look-ahead schedules.


Change Orders & Contract Administration

  • Identify scope changes, differing site conditions, and contractual impacts.
  • Follow contractual notification requirements and documentation procedures.
  • Prepare, price, negotiate, and manage change orders.
  • Manage subcontractor and supplier change orders.
  • Assist with claims preparation and resolution efforts when necessary.
  • Protect the Company's contractual and financial interests throughout the project lifecycle.


Operational / Resource Management: 40%

  • Communicate project schedules and operational goals to field leadership.
  • Coordinate labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractor resources to support project execution.
  • Maximize equipment utilization and minimize unnecessary rental expenses.
  • Review project production reports, labor productivity, equipment performance, and operational metrics.
  • Ensure Company field processes are consistently followed, including:
  • Three-Week Look Ahead Planning
  • Daily Huddles
  • Equipment Inspections
  • Site Safety and Health Plans
  • Crisis Management Procedures
  • Coordinate major material procurement and long-lead item deliveries.
  • Review field reporting for payroll, production quantities, and material tracking accuracy.
  • Participate in workforce planning and staffing discussions.


Safety & Quality Leadership

  • Champion a proactive safety culture across all assigned projects.
  • Participate in jobsite safety audits, inspections, and project reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety programs, and client requirements.
  • Verify work is performed in accordance with project plans, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Assist field teams in resolving safety, quality, and operational challenges.


Position Requirements

Position/Travel Expectations

  • This position operates primarily from construction site mobile offices but also involves meetings at corporate facilities.
  • Travel to assigned project locations is required.
  • Overnight travel and extended project assignments may be necessary.
  • Must be able to travel throughout the company's operating region as business needs dictate.
  • Will be exposed to various weather conditions, working around moving machinery/equipment, excessive noise, and dust/dirt on job sites.
  • Will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment such as protective eyewear, safety vests, hard hats, and appropriate footwear.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred.
  • 7+ years of project management experience in heavy civil, infrastructure, industrial, or commercial construction including alternative delivery projects.
  • Experience managing projects valued at $25 million or greater.
  • Experience managing self-perform operations and subcontracted work.
  • Experience with transportation, site development, utility, industrial, mission critical, or infrastructure projects preferred.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Strong familiarity with project management software, such as Microsoft, Procore, Heavy Job, HCSS Heavy Bid, P6, and Viewpoint.
  • Personnel management experience.


Work Authorization / Security Clearance

  • Employee must be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Drug screens are required after an offer is accepted, and continued employment is based on the initial drug screen and any future/random drug screens administered
  • A background check will be required
  • A confidentiality agreement may be required
  • Driving records may be required
  • Additional client-specific clearances may be required, including government, military, or mission critical facility access
