Full Job Description
We have an opening for a Project Management Group Leader to lead a group of project management engineers who support the execution of high-impact technical projects that address national security challenges. The group will focus on managing milestone-driven, high-risk, high-reward projects in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment. The project management group, alongside Principal Investigators and technical experts, works to deliver results on aggressive timelines while navigating complex scientific and engineering landscapes. You will lead a team contributing to a growing portfolio of national security-related R&D initiatives in fields such as bioengineering, advanced materials and manufacturing, devices and microsystems, and inertial fusion energy. This position emphasizes initiative, autonomy, and leadership in both planning and execution. You will help drive large-scale strategic projects that align with the Lab's mission in research and development for national security. This position is in the Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Processing (AMMP) section of the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate. This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You will have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week. This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level. You will - Lead the project management engineering capability by matching projects with appropriate project management engineers and ensuring high-quality project support for Principal Investigators and project customers. - Hire, support, develop, and lead project management engineering staff to: - Support the successful execution of milestone-driven technical projects across engineering and scientific domains. - Advise project teams and Principal Investigators on team organization, scheduling, budgeting, risk mitigation, and progress tracking. - Apply technical and operational knowledge to improve project and organizational safety, process efficiency, and compliance. - Plan and oversee procurement, fabrication, and system integration tasks as needed. - Support contract oversight and collaboration agreements. - Participate in implementing or improving project management frameworks, tools, and best practices. - Document procedures and develop compelling visual content for project updates and milestones. - Organize and facilitate team meetings, including scheduling, logistics, agendas, and action tracking. - Serve as an individual project management engineer for major projects. - Develop the skills and performance of staff through mentoring, goal planning, and performance evaluation processes. - Contribute to AMMP section leadership meetings and management processes. - Perform other duties as assigned. Additional job responsibilities at the TSL.4 level - Work with section and division leaders to provide strategic technical and personnel leadership for the project management engineering area. - Drive significant financial, technical, and mission impact for LLNL. - Manage and author government reports and ensure compliance with appropriate requirements. Qualifications - This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or an active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire. - Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, project management, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience. - Experience working in a laboratory, R&D, or machine shop environment. - Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, document analyses, and prepare, present, and explain technical information. - Ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment with initiative, creativity, and strong interpersonal skills. - Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects with competing priorities in a fast-paced environment. - Advanced knowledge of project management methodologies and experience implementing project management tools and practices. - Experience interacting with division-, directorate-, and program-level management. Additional qualifications at the TSL.4 level - Master's degree in engineering, science, project management, or a related field. - Expert knowledge of government reporting requirements and resolving complex compliance issues. - Expert-level knowledge of staff development and extensive related experience in hiring activities. - Significant experience providing supervision, workforce planning, coaching, and mentoring to staff members, preparing performance appraisals, and participating in alignment and hiring activities. - Significant experience leading a team or group and directing technical support work in a multidisciplinary team environment, along with a demonstrated ability to effectively manage and utilize people and available resources. - Expert-level written and verbal communication skills, as well as demonstrated success in resolving complex problems and applying negotiation skills necessary to manage personnel issues positively by communicating effectively, defusing conflicts, and overcoming setbacks. Qualifications We Desire - Knowledge of engineering policies and procedures. - Demonstrated management skills in support of major Laboratory programs. - Experience interacting with other DOE laboratories and major LLNL programs. Pay Range $167,340 - $254,544 Annually $167,340 - $212,160 Annually for the TSL.3 level $200,760 - $254,544 Annually for the TSL.4 level This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
