Full Job Description
Transform the everyday with us!

Siemens Electrification & Automation is enabling a more reliable, resilient, and sustainable electric grid. By partnering with utilities and EPCs, our integrated, turnkey electrical systems support grid modernization, capacity expansion, and energy transition.

We are seeking a Project Engineer - Utility Systems to join our team, supporting critical infrastructure projects across the electric power industry. This role offers an outstanding career pathway for engineers seeking more than a single-product, transaction-based career, with a clear trajectory to grow into a multi-functional, customer-facing technical leader. You'll dynamically expand your expertise across substation and power plant projects, renewable generation (including solar), and overhead and underground distribution systems. As you develop mastery, you'll evolve into a hybrid engineering role combining project, application, and order engineering, becoming a trusted face to the customer from quotation through construction.

Our Utility Systems & Solutions team delivers utility-grade electrical systems that drive energy transition and grid modernization across the entire generation, transmission, and distribution (GTD) value chain. We combine deep power-system expertise, digital-ready platforms, and proven EPC execution to reduce project risk, accelerate deployment, and future-proof grids. Our comprehensive, standards-compliant portfolio, engineered for exacting safety and lifecycle requirements, includes MV switchgear (AIS & GIS) & outdoor circuit breakers, protection and automation systems, power equipment centers & distribution solutions, and LV motor control centers & PV inverters. These solutions seamlessly deploy across critical infrastructure for Generation (conventional plants, renewables, energy storage), Transmission (substations, switching stations, grid interconnections), and Distribution (feeder expansion, grid hardening, customer electrification).

This hybrid Project Engineer - Utility Systems position is based at our national headquarters in Wendell, NC. Located in the heart of the Research Triangle about 20 minutes east of Raleigh, Wendell offers top-rated schools, a mild climate, easy access to mountains and coast, and a cost of living that allows our compensation to go further. Local candidates are encouraged to apply. We offer relocation assistance for eligible candidates.
You'll make a difference with:
Order Engineering - Technical & Project Ownership:
  • Design, configure, and deliver medium voltage (5-35kV) switchgear solutions by analyzing customer specifications, one-line diagrams, and schematics.
  • Own projects end-to-end from technical quotation support through application engineering, manufacturing coordination, and handover.
  • Create high-quality engineering documentation including one-lines, protection and control schematics, and Bills of Material, using Siemens engineering tools.
  • Partner closely with manufacturing, supply chain, and quality teams to ensure designs are built right the first time.
Multi-functional & Customer Engagement:
  • Serve as a trusted technical partner to customers, utilities, EPCs, and internal collaborators.
  • Collaborate across engineering, sales, operations, and project teams to deliver integrated switchgear systems and solutions.
  • Combine order engineering and sales engineering responsibilities as you grow, simplifying the customer experience.
Growth towards a Hybrid Utility Systems Role:
  • Expand your technical scope beyond an initial product into substations, power plants, renewable generation sites (including solar/PV), and underground and overhead power distribution systems.
  • Contribute to business development efforts, supporting technical strategy, customer engagement, and solution alignment.
  • Manage project responsibilities (schedule, cost, execution) as appropriate.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support the continuous improvement of tools, standards, and processes.
You'll win us over by having the following qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in electrical power systems, utility substation switchgear, power plant switchgear systems, or medium voltage systems.
  • Strong understanding of medium voltage control and protection systems (SCADA, IEC 61850, DNP3 experience a plus).
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics and deliver cost-effective, high-quality engineering solutions.
  • Experience creating and managing BOMs within ERP systems (SAP preferred).
  • Meticulous, focused approach with strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Curiosity, adaptability, and a desire to continuously expand technical and commercial expertise.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis without company sponsorship now or in the future.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Engineering Base (strongly preferred) or AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Experience with MV switchgear.
  • Exposure to renewables, substations, combined cycle or simple cycle power plants, or large-scale utility infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with ANSI, IEEE, UL, and NEMA standards.
  • Master's degree in Engineering (Power Systems preferred).
  • Experience using Salesforce or other CRM.
