OverviewMSA is seeking a Project Engineer - Mechanical to join our team in Madison, Milwaukee, Appleton or Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. In this role, you will lead and support the planning, design, and construction of municipal infrastructure projects that help communities operate safely, efficiently, and sustainably. You will work closely with project managers, municipal clients, technical staff, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions for the communities we serve.
Responsibilities
Municipal Infrastructure Design
- Lead the planning, design, and development of municipal infrastructure projects from concept through construction with a focus on water resources
- Prepare and review engineering calculations, studies, reports, design documentation, and construction documents
- Support projects involving community infrastructure such as streets, utilities, drainage, site improvements, and related public works systems
- Develop construction specifications, cost estimates, and schedules with a focus on accuracy, constructability, and client needs
Project Delivery & Quality
- Manage assigned project components with minimal oversight while monitoring scope, schedule, and budget
- Coordinate work with project managers, municipal clients, internal technical teams, and external partners
- Review work completed by junior engineers, designers, and technicians to ensure quality, consistency, and alignment with project goals
- Support QA/QC processes and take ownership of technical accuracy across assigned deliverables
Field & Construction Support
- Conduct field investigations, site visits, and construction observations to verify existing conditions and support project design
- Review construction progress, document observations, and help resolve technical challenges in the field
- Confirm that work aligns with plans, specifications, applicable standards, and community expectations
Client & Team Collaboration
- Serve as a client contact for assigned tasks or projects, communicating updates with professionalism and sound judgment
- Lead or co-lead project meetings related to technical updates, deliverables, schedules, and project needs
- Maintain consistent communication with Project Managers and Team Leaders regarding workload, budgets, schedules, and staffing needs
- Mentor junior staff by reviewing work, providing feedback, and supporting their professional growth
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited program in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline
Experience
- 4+ years of relevant post-graduate engineering experience
- Experience with municipal infrastructure, public works, or community development projects preferred
- Experience supporting projects through planning, design, bidding, and construction preferred
Licensure
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required, or ability to acquire
- Wisconsin PE license preferred; multi-state licensure may be beneficial depending on project assignments
Skills
- Strong knowledge of engineering principles, standards, and practices related to municipal infrastructure design
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, GIS, CADD, BIM, and relevant modeling or analysis software
- Strong technical writing, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to lead project components, coordinate multidisciplinary work, and integrate input from multiple stakeholders
- Strong organization and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple project demands
- Ability to monitor scope, schedule, and budget and proactively identify project needs or concerns
- Effective mentoring skills and a commitment to quality, accountability, and continuous improvement
