Project Engineer - Los Angeles, CA

About Your Role

CMTS is seeking an experienced Project Engineer to support College Project Teams (CPT) in the successful delivery of educational facility construction projects throughout Los Angeles, CA. This role provides technical and engineering support to Project and Construction Managers while coordinating closely with Program Management Office (PMO) staff, contractors, architects, engineers, inspectors, consultants, and College personnel.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and capable of supporting multiple projects in a fast-paced construction environment.

Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in:
    • Engineering
    • Construction Management
    • Business
    • Or a related field
  • Additional qualifying experience exceeding the minimum requirements may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.


What You'll Need to Get the Job Done
  • Minimum 5-8 years of recent professional experience in a similar or equivalent project or construction management support role
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to take initiative and make sound decisions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction plans, specifications, and shop drawings
  • Knowledge of construction processes, documentation, and contract administration

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting educational facility programs and projects
  • Experience working on Division of the State Architect (DSA) projects

  • Experience using Proliance or similar PMIS systems
  • Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Construction Manager (CCM), or similar industry credentials


What You'll Do
  • Participate in and occasionally lead design and construction meetings
  • Conduct field inspections on construction, demolition, rehabilitation, alteration, addition, and repair projects to verify compliance with plans, specifications, College standards, and DSA requirements
  • Read and interpret construction plans and shop drawings
  • Assist in preparing written correspondence, reports, procedures, and guidelines
  • Support development of weekly and monthly status reports, including project photo documentation
  • Review, estimate, negotiate, and process construction change orders and field orders
  • Review and enforce construction and professional services contracts
  • Manage and coordinate contractors and outside consultants, including invoice review and approval
  • Assess project risks and develop risk mitigation strategies and risk registers
  • Facilitate resolution of construction and design-related issues
  • Coordinate with architects regarding RFIs, submittals, and Construction Change Documents
  • Generate and distribute meeting minutes for construction and design meetings
  • Verify contractor maintenance of record drawings prior to monthly progress payments
  • Maintain project files in both electronic and hard copy formats
  • Review submittals for compliance with project plans and specifications
  • Generate and draft Proposed Board Actions (PBA)
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned
