This individual is expected to set targets through the budgeting process, communicate the goals of the department to all direct reports and facilitate the removal of obstacles that prevent the area from attaining these goals. Coordinate on an on-going basis with other plant functions such as Materials, Accounting, Engineering/Maintenance and Human Resources to achieve goals. Ensure that an open line of communications is maintained with the local union leadership, as well as all employees, to maintain and improve the quality of product and the work environment.
Essential Functions: - Provides leadership and direction for safety in the deposition of thin films. This will be accomplished by facilitating all safety activities in the area, including behavioral observations, hazard identification and by promoting safety daily through direct communication with employees.
- Provides leadership and direction to the organization in all aspects of NSG's proprietary APCVD process. The Group Leader will focus on the elimination of waste with the help of the Process Improvers and Shift Supervisors.
- Maintain a positive relationship with the employee's Union representation and the employees so that the focus remains on the obstacles and barriers preventing the facility from attaining its goals.
- Through reviewing the key manufacturing metrics for the facility with other Group Leaders, the major areas of loss will be identified and in turn detailed plans for reducing this loss will be developed.
- Benchmarking will be utilized within the NSG Group so to ensure that Best Demonstrated Practices are implemented at the Ottawa facility. In addition, inquiries will be made inside the Group on specific issues that would benefit from others' perspectives on the subject.
- Coordinate with the Materials Manager and Production Scheduler on all cut lists so that we maximize production while maintaining schedule integrity and customer satisfaction levels.
- Review of actual performance against the budget routinely to address shortfalls and identify where additional plant resources are necessary to attain the budget figures.
- Promote continuous improvement in the deposition of thin films. Develop direct reports to facilitate problem solving activities, utilizing the production database to analyze trends.
- Fully support the internal and external ISO 9000, ISO 14000 audits.
- Work with the Human Resource department and the other departmental managers to develop training plans and skill assessments for salaried and hourly personnel.
- Work with Engineering & Maintenance and the other departmental managers on the justification and installation of capital projects and downtime prevention. Schedule and help prioritize projects and maintenance activities during outages or other periods where assets are available.
- Maintain relationships with Corporate R&D and Engineering resources; facilitate on-line trials of new products and processes to support business development.

Scope/Dimensions:- Incumbent has a high degree of organizational freedom to assign work and develop systems as necessary to achieve departmental performance goals.
- Incumbent should interact with employees at all levels on a regular basis to develop rapport and provide the training and support needed for all employees to contribute their full potential to the success of the site.
- Incumbent will be available by mobile phone at all times to support the continuous manufacturing site in case of equipment emergency, employee injury, government inspection, etc.

Salary Range: $104,966 - $143,952
Qualifications Required:- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or Materials Science
- 5 years' managerial experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Qualifications Desired: - 5 years' experience in float glass manufacturing
- Experience with Instrumentation / PLC / SCADA systems
- Six Sigma / Lean Manufacturing Experience
