Full Job Description
Position Summary

Voya Energy is seeking a Staff-level leader to own product safety and certification strategy for our metal-air generator system. As a new product category entering a complex regulatory landscape, Voya needs someone who can rigorously map and forecast safety, certification, and permitting needs; design a sequenced strategy that aligns with our product roadmap; and ensure that the resulting work is something we can stand behind and communicate clearly both internally and externally.

This role is the first dedicated hire in this function and will work closely with the product, technology, and commercial teams to identify requirements and key actions early. These results will be built into product decisions and used to smooth the path to deployment with regulators, certification bodies, utilities, and customers. The initial phase of this work is strategy, with execution phasing in as Voya approaches its first field demo deployments in 2027.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop a foundational understanding of Voya's technology, products, and customer use cases.
  • Develop and own a sequenced safety and certification strategy for Voya's generator products, aligned to product milestones.
  • Map and forecast the safety, certification, and permitting requirements that Voya will likely encounter. Identify potential roadblocks and barriers early and design the path through them.
  • Help translate safety and regulatory requirements into product requirements.
  • Partner with engineering, commercial, and product teams to ensure plans and timelines align with viable certification pathways.
  • Develop the safety and certification narrative for use with external stakeholders, including customers, regulators, AHJs, investors, and the public.
  • Monitor the evolving regulatory, standards, and permitting landscape to ensure Voya's strategy remains relevant and current.
  • Participate fully in the company safety program.

Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience in regulatory affairs, product safety, certification, or product compliance.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physical sciences, or a related technical field required. Candidates with non-technical degrees will be considered where paired with substantial experience in hardware product safety, certification, or technical regulatory strategy.
  • Background in regulated hardware and systems such as energy storage, EVs, distributed generation, fuel cells, microgrids, or grid-tied power, with the judgment to know when various standards and frameworks should apply.
  • Track record of developing safety and certification strategy, not only executing existing roadmaps.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Able to turn technical safety and regulatory work into a clear, credible story and a competitive asset, not just procedural details.
  • Direct experience working with NRTLs, AHJs, utilities, and other external stakeholders to successfully certify and deploy hardware.
  • Experience working cross-functionally, including with product, engineering, and commercial teams.
  • Experience with novel product categories or first-of-a-kind regulatory pathways a plus.
  • Familiarity with defense-sector regulatory considerations a plus.
  • Ability to make material progress despite evolving and developing requirements.

Location: Hayward, CA. Full-time on-site.

What We Offer
  • Salary & Benefits:
    • Competitive salary and equity compensation commensurate with experience
    • Unlimited PTO for exempt employees
    • 100% employer paid medical, dental, and vision coverage
