Process Engineer - Forging

Location: Canton, Ohio

Position Overview:

The Process Engineer supports the design, development, and optimization of forging processes to improve safety, quality, and efficiency,. This role collaborates with engineering, operations, maintenance, quality, and tooling teams to drive continuous improvement and ensure manufacturing excellence in a unionized, heavy industrial environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Process Development & Optimization: Design, develop, and refine forging processes for new and existing jobs. Implement best practices to reduce cycle times, improve die life, and enhance part quality.
  • Problem Solving & Troubleshooting: Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for process and product issues. Analyze performance data and process trends to identify improvement opportunities. Support non-conformance investigations related to process deviations or customer complaints.
  • Quality & Compliance: Ensure process compliance with industry standards and accreditations (e.g., ASTM, ASME, NADCAP). Collaborate with Quality, Operations, and Metallurgy to maintain and improve process capability. Develop and maintain control plans, PFMEAs, and process documentation.
  • Continuous Improvement & Lean Manufacturing: Conduct time studies and capacity analyses to support workflow optimization. Identify and implement Lean, Six Sigma, or Kaizen initiatives in production environments. Reduce waste, enhance throughput, and improve safe work practices through structured improvement projects.
  • Documentation & Standardization: Develop and update work instructions, process flow diagrams, and setup sheets. Maintain accurate process documentation for audits, training, and traceability. Standardize forging practices across shifts and equipment to ensure repeatability.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration & Support: Provide technical support to production operators, tooling teams, and maintenance. Assist in troubleshooting forging processes, and material handling issues. Participate in Advanced Product Quality Planning and PPAP activities for new product launches.
  • Capital Projects & Technology Implementation: Support or lead projects involving new equipment, layout changes, or automation. Evaluate and recommend new tools, materials, and technologies to improve process reliability.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Metallurgical Engineering. 10+ years of experience within Process Engineering in a Forging or Steel Manufacturing environment in lieu of degree; forging experience is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with closed die forging processes, tooling, and forging equipment.
  • Familiarity with CAD (e.g., PTC Creo, SolidWorks, AutoCAD)
  • Working knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma, and root cause analysis tools.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Understanding of basic metallurgy, grain flow, and forging defects.
  • Understanding of GD&T and ability to read and interpret blueprint drawings
  • Flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
