The
Process Controls Engineer is responsible for improving plant performance, reliability, and safety through the application of advanced instrumentation, control systems, and automation technologies. This role combines process optimization with project execution, supporting both day-to-day operations and long-term improvements. The engineer will lead and support control system projects from concept through startup, while also providing technical expertise in troubleshooting, training, and system reliability.
I'm interested! What will I get to do in this position? Process Control & Optimization- Identify and implement control strategies to improve process stability, efficiency, and product quality.
- Develop and maintain alarm management systems and critical interlocks.
- Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis using control system data and historian tools.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies to enhance control capabilities.
- Integrate data analytics and modeling tools to support process insights and continuous improvement.
Project Development & Execution- Lead and support instrumentation and control projects from concept through startup.
- Develop project scopes, functional definitions, and cost estimates.
- Coordinate with internal teams and external contractors to ensure timely and cost-effective execution.
- Ensure compliance with engineering standards, safety regulations, and documentation requirements.
- Participate in capital planning and control system migration strategies.
Instrumentation & Automation Support- Specify, install, and maintain field instrumentation, final control elements, and control hardware.
- Support and maintain DCS, PLC, and HMI systems.
- Assist in managing and expanding the PI data historian and related analytics platforms.
- Provide training and mentoring to operations and maintenance personnel on control systems.
Safety, Environmental, and Regulatory Compliance- Support site safety and environmental efforts through control system design and monitoring.
- Ensure compliance with ES&H and cGMP requirements.
- Implement technologies to track and reduce emissions and improve process safety.
What skills and experience do I need to be successful in this role? - B.S. in Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, or Instrumentation Engineering preferred.
- Strong understanding of process control principles and industrial automation.
- Experience with:
- Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLCs
- Inductive Automation Ignition HMI
- Microsoft Windows-based server environments and virtual machines
- Field instrumentation and industrial networking
- Proficiency in programming and scripting (e.g., Ladder, Structured Text, VB, .NET, SQL).
- Experience in industrial manufacturing; chemical industry preferred.
- Working knowledge of industrial electrical distribution and safety systems.
- Ability to safely exit the plant in the event of an emergency.
- Preferred (Bonus) Skills:
- Familiarity with IT hardware and software infrastructure
- Understanding of cybersecurity principles for industrial control systems
- Experience with network architecture and system integration
Compensation at ICL: If you are hired at ICL, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and/or experience. We also offer a generous benefits package (more information on benefits listed below).
Salary Range: $76,000 - $131,000
Annual Bonus Target: 5% - 7%, subject to plan provisions.
