Full Job Description
PRIVATE INVESTMENT RESEARCH MANAGER
Location: Toronto, ONSet-up: Onsite

Are you an experienced investment professional who is energized by the opportunity to combine rigorous investment analysis with purpose-driven investing? Our client is looking for a Private Investment Research Manager to join a growing investment team and play a key role in evaluating private-market opportunities across Canada and globally. This is an opportunity for someone who understands the fundamentals of private investments and wants to apply that expertise in a setting where financial performance and measurable environmental and social outcomes go hand in hand.
The Opportunity

In this role, you'll have meaningful ownership over the research and due diligence process for private investment strategies and products, including private equity, venture capital, private debt, private real estate, real assets and select co-investments. You'll be responsible for turning extensive information and data into practical investment insights - helping inform portfolio construction, investment decisions and client recommendations.
What You'll Be Doing

Private Investment Research & Due Diligence
  • Lead comprehensive research and due diligence on private fund managers, investment products and selected direct or co-investment opportunities in Canada and international markets.
  • Assess investment managers and opportunities through financial, operational, strategic and impact lenses.
  • Review information from a broad range of sources, including data rooms, financial statements, fund reports, market research, third-party providers and industry publications.
  • Develop and maintain informed views and recommendations on existing investments, prospective opportunities and watchlist assets.
  • Evaluate fund strategies, business models, return expectations, risk factors, market positioning and broader investment considerations.
  • Establish and monitor investment KPIs, including financial and impact-related measures.
  • Oversee regular financial and impact performance reviews for private funds and investment products.
  • Build and maintain a high-quality pipeline of potential fund managers and private investment opportunities.
  • Develop strong working relationships with fund managers, product providers and other external investment partners.
  • Continuously identify opportunities to strengthen the quality, consistency and efficiency of investment research and due diligence practices.

Collaboration & Client Support
  • Partner with portfolio managers and broader investment teams to translate research into actionable investment recommendations.
  • Contribute to client engagements and take ownership of assigned deliverables, timelines and project budgets.
  • Help develop research, perspectives and thought leadership on areas such as macroeconomic trends, impact investing, asset allocation and portfolio strategy.
  • Participate in business development initiatives, presentations and marketing activities.
  • Work collaboratively with leadership on strategic projects and initiatives that support the continued growth of the organization.
  • Communicate sophisticated investment concepts clearly to both investment professionals and non-specialist audiences.
What You Bring

We're looking for an investment professional who combines technical depth with curiosity, sound judgment and a genuine interest in the role capital can play in addressing environmental and social challenges.

Ideally, you'll bring:
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in private investment fund due diligence, manager research and/or portfolio monitoring across private asset classes.
  • Experience evaluating private investment opportunities, with direct private investment experience considered a strong asset.
  • A strong understanding of the end-to-end investment and fund management due diligence process, including legal considerations, negotiations and ongoing monitoring.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct financial, business, investment, attribution, modelling and impact analysis of third-party fund managers.
  • Experience assessing areas such as investment viability, business models, return profiles, stress scenarios, market trends and risk.
  • A relevant university degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Professional credentials such as CFA or CAIA, or graduate-level education, are considered an asset.
  • Strong project management, organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage multiple workstreams independently.
  • Previous experience in sustainable investing, ESG or impact investing is strongly preferred.
  • Fluency in French is an asset and strongly preferred.
  • An interest in or experience applying AI tools to investment research or investment processes is considered an advantage.
  • Eligibility to work in Canada without employment restrictions.
The Kind of Person Who Will Thrive Here

Technical expertise matters, but so does how you approach the work.

You'll be well suited to this opportunity if you:
  • Care deeply about the potential of impact investing to contribute to environmental and social progress.
  • Are naturally curious and enjoy going beyond surface-level information to understand how an investment really works.
  • Think critically and are comfortable challenging assumptions and asking difficult questions.
  • Can take ownership of complex projects while staying organized and focused on deadlines.
  • Are comfortable operating in a fast-moving environment where priorities can evolve.
  • Have strong judgment and can make sense of ambiguity and incomplete information.
  • Enjoy collaborating with people across investment, client and leadership teams.
  • Can take complex financial or investment concepts and communicate them in a clear, compelling way.
  • Bring strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence and confidence communicating with both internal and external audiences.
  • Value integrity, empathy, curiosity, generosity and perseverance.
  • Are motivated by contributing to something bigger than investment performance alone.
Why Consider This Opportunity?

This is more than an investment research position. It's an opportunity to apply your private-markets expertise to a growing field that is increasingly focused on how capital is deployed, who benefits from it and what outcomes it creates.
Ready to Put Your Investment Expertise to Work Differently?

If you're an experienced private-markets professional who wants to combine investment rigour, intellectual curiosity and measurable impact, this could be an opportunity worth exploring. We're looking for someone who can bring both the analytical discipline required to evaluate complex private investments and the perspective needed to understand their broader environmental and social implications.

If that sounds like the next chapter you're looking for, we'd love to hear from you.
