Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for Principal Mechanical Design Engineer / Senior Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join the team of qualified individuals on our Test and Evaluation organization. This role is located onsite in Melbourne, FL.

**This role may be filled at the Principal OR Senior Principal level based on the qualifications listed, below**

In this role, the successful candidate will work on the Lab Test team and be responsible for mechanical designs associated with test lab mechanical equipment, and hardware in the loop test benches. These design activities will be associated with any of the following - cable interface assemblies, equipment racks, WRA hardware, and all associated supporting installations. The designer will help develop new weapons systems demonstration systems for future business. This role will be a dual lab design and lab operations role. Candidate will be responsible for design, oversight of build and then operations and demonstration of the asset.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate cross IPT / discipline collaboration in the development of lab designs.
  • Procurement of hardware in support of mechanical designs.
  • Serve as the point of contact with vendors, manufacturers, and technician teams in the fabrication, assembly, and installation of test lab equipment.
  • Develop solutions with minimal oversight and direction.
  • Provide input into design and fabrication of development and test hardware.
  • Serve as a manufacturing liaison during the build process to ensure the highest quality standards are met for your projects.
  • Utilize strong technical background, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, in-depth understanding of military aircraft functionality, and demonstrated lab integration experience with a modern software intensive mission systems architecture.

Basic Qualifications (Principal):
  • Must have a Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) discipline AND 5 years of related professional/military experience, OR a Master of Science degree in a STEM discipline AND 3 years of related professional/military experience, OR a STEM Ph.D. AND 1 year of related professional/military experience.
  • Your ability to transfer and maintain the final adjudicated U.S. government Secret clearance (must be in-scope or enrolled in Continuous Evaluation) and any program access(es) required for the position within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the Company.
  • Your ability to obtain and/or transfer and maintain the final U.S. adjudicated government Top Secret clearance
  • Must have experience with mechanical systems design and/or integration in a laboratory or test environment.


Basic Qualifications (Senior Principal):
  • Must have a Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) discipline AND 8 years of related professional/military experience, OR a Master of Science degree in a STEM discipline AND 6 years of related professional/military experience, OR a STEM Ph.D. AND 4 year of related professional/military experience.
  • Your ability to transfer and maintain the final adjudicated U.S. government Secret clearance (must be in-scope or enrolled in Continuous Evaluation) and any program access(es) required for the position within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the Company.
  • Your ability to obtain and/or transfer and maintain the final U.S. adjudicated government Top Secret clearance
  • Must have experience with mechanical systems design and/or integration in a laboratory or test environment.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Current, active Top Secret clearance
  • 2 years of mechanical engineering design experience in the test discipline
  • Knowledge of electrical components, power design and considerations
  • Proven experience leading electrical design projects, including cable assemblies, data acquisition hardware, and sensor integration
  • Experience on a new capture program
  • Experience with lab and flight test instrumentation and data systems
  • Understanding of air vehicle systems architectures


Primary Level Salary Range: $98,400.00 - $147,600.00

Secondary Level Salary Range: $122,800.00 - $184,200.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
