Full Job Description
Purpose:

We are currently recruiting for a Principal Process Safety Engineer. Our team includes world class experts and dynamic go-getters. This is a full-time position based in Calgary, Alberta or Edmonton, Alberta.

Responsible for ensuring that the Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) aspects of the design within the project scope are maintained to the relevant acceptable standards and comply with applicable legislation. In addition, execute and monitor Safety Engineering activities which typically will entail:

Responsibilities:
  • Provision of technical assurance across the technical safety and loss prevention activities and deliverables as detailed in this job description.
  • Leading and coordinating the activities and deliverables allocated to the location in accordance with the project schedule.
  • Guidance on the appropriate risk mitigation measures required for operational and integrity related Process Safety issues.
  • Guidance for operational issues on safety engineering systems including fire / explosion protection systems, and emergency facilities.
  • Knowledge and/or participation of industry/group led research or developments in the management of Process Safety hazards.
  • Contributing to maintenance and update of relevant safety engineering standards.
  • Provide guidance, development and lateral learning to other Process Safety Engineers.
  • Support the Lead Safety Engineer, project management and engineering disciplines with process safety concerns and queries.
  • Lead and manage specialist Process Safety Engineering Contractors, including work planning and prioritization, QA, and budgetary control.
  • Delivery of formal safety studies including Consequence Assessments, Fire Safety Studies, Escape and Muster Studies, Equipment Survivability Studies, risk assessments both qualitative and quantitative.
  • Recommend any additional Technical Safety reviews that are necessary because of scope change, design development, etc. and check that all required Technical Safety Reviews are completed.
  • Facilitating hazard workshops for Process Safety hazards. These may include HAZID, HAZOP, SIL classification and Facility Layout and Siting.

In summary, the Principal Safety Engineer, as part of the Worley Canada West Safety Engineering discipline, ensures that the design is in accordance with the applicable standards and legislation.

What you will bring:
Technical and Industry Experience:
  • Extensive experience in process safety and fire protection engineering is essential.
  • Experience in production or engineering of oil and gas facilities, Hydrogen, Carbon Capture, mining, and chemical industries.
  • Knowledge of applicable local/international standards, statutory and regulatory specifications.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the fundamentals of safety & risk engineering.
  • Experience in performing facility siting studies, consequence modelling and QRA, using proprietary software i.e. PHAST and SAFETI.
  • Experience in the design of active and passive fire protection systems, including fire water, sprinkler and deluge, clean agent, fireproofing, fire zones, etc. using proprietary software i.e. AFT-Fathom and Pipenet.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the fundamentals of risk-based and performance-based fire protection engineering.
  • Facilitating process hazard analysis and risk workshops.
  • Knowledge of applicable local/international fire protection standards, statutory and regulatory specifications such as NFPA, API, ASME etc.
  • Having experience in Greenfield & Brownfield EPC Projects, pipelines, storage areas and terminals.
  • Experienced in the design of fire and gas detection and alarm systems with detail knowledge of fire alarm control panels, interface connections, wiring and cable routing, fire and gas mapping, etc.
  • Team player, able to motivate peers, influence without direct authority and manage change.
  • Positive and forward-looking attitude where the incumbent works with clients to create a positive result vs. policing and enforcement.
  • Must be resident of Canada.

Education - Qualifications, Accreditation, Training:

Required:
  • Chemical Engineering Degree or equivalent.
  • P. Eng (Alberta) designation.
