The Principal Pavement Engineering Subject Matter Expert provides strategic technical leadership in pavement engineering, mechanistic-empirical pavement analysis and design, pavement materials, performance evaluation, preservation, rehabilitation, and transportation asset management. This position leads the development and implementation of innovative pavement engineering solutions by integrating advanced analytical methods, field performance evaluation, non-destructive testing, mechanistic modeling, and data-driven decision-making to support transportation agencies and infrastructure owners. The role also provides technical oversight for complex pavement investigations, forensic evaluations, research implementation, emerging materials and technologies, and the delivery of resilient, sustainable, and high-performance pavement systems.

Core Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic technical leadership and subject matter expertise in pavement engineering, including pavement design, materials, rehabilitation, preservation, and performance evaluation.
  • Lead the development and review of innovative pavement engineering solutions for complex transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Advise project teams and clients on mechanistic-empirical pavement design, asset management, life-cycle analysis, and resilient pavement strategies.
  • Direct complex pavement investigations, forensic evaluations, non-destructive testing (NDT), and performance assessments to support engineering decisions.
  • Support business development through client engagement, proposal development, technical presentations, and implementation of emerging technologies and research into engineering practice.

You'll thrive here if you have
  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Pavement Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in pavement engineering, transportation infrastructure, or applied pavement research.
  • Demonstrated expertise in pavement design, pavement materials, rehabilitation, performance evaluation, and asset management.
  • Proven record of leading complex engineering projects applied research, or implementation initiatives for transportation agencies or infrastructure owners.
  • Strong technical communication skills, including preparation of technical reports, presentations, and client recommendations.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or ability to obtain licensure if required.
  • Expert knowledge of mechanistic-empirical pavement design and analysis.
  • Experience with pavement materials characterization, pavement performance evaluation, preservation, and rehabilitation strategies.
  • Knowledge of pavement condition assessment, non-destructive testing (NDT), forensic engineering, and field performance monitoring.
  • Familiarity with pavement management systems, life-cycle cost analysis, and transportation asset management principles.
  • Experience applying advanced analytical methods, computational modeling, artificial intelligence, or machine learning to pavement engineering applications.
  • Working knowledge of AASHTO, FHWA, ASTM, and state DOT pavement design standards, specifications, and engineering practices.
