Full Job Description
Purpose:

We are currently recruiting for a Principal Mechanical Engineer - HVAC, Building Services and Fire Protection Our team includes world class experts and dynamic go-getters. This is a full-time position based in Markham, Ontario. This senior technical leadership role is responsible for the design and delivery of HVAC, industrial building services, utilities, plumbing, drainage and fire protection engineering solutions for process plants, mining and metals operations, energy facilities, laboratories, industrial buildings, control rooms, substations and other critical infrastructure environments. Reporting to the Mechanical and Piping Engineering Department Manager, Canada East, the successful candidate will lead discipline teams, oversee engineering deliverables, support procurement and construction activities, and ensure solutions are safe, compliant, constructible and aligned with Worley, customer and statutory requirements.

The ideal candidate is a self-directed and collaborative engineering leader with strong technical judgment, clear communication skills, and the ability to guide multidisciplinary teams through complex projects in regulated industrial environments.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical leadership for HVAC, building services and fire protection engineering from concept and feasibility through detailed design, construction support, commissioning and closeout.
  • Lead and coordinate engineering teams in the preparation, review and approval of design criteria, calculations, specifications, equipment datasheets, layouts, reports, drawings and other technical deliverables.
  • Oversee the design of industrial HVAC and building services systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, exhaust, filtration, pressurization, make-up air, plumbing interfaces, drainage systems, heat recovery systems and utility coordination.
  • Provide technical direction for fire protection scope, including fire water distribution, sprinkler and suppression system coordination, hydrants, standpipes, fire pumps, fire alarm interfaces and code-driven life safety requirements.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables comply with applicable codes, standards, regulatory requirements, client specifications, Worley procedures, HSE expectations and quality requirements.
  • Support equipment selection and sizing for air handling units, fans, chillers, boilers, heat pumps, cooling towers, ductwork, dampers, louvers, filters, coils, controls and related mechanical components.
  • Coordinate with mechanical, process, piping, electrical, instrumentation and controls, civil, structural, architectural and construction teams to deliver integrated, safe and constructible design solutions.
  • Provide technical input for hazardous area ventilation, indoor air quality, occupational health requirements, thermal comfort, equipment heat load management and critical room environmental control.
  • Support project managers with scope definition, work-hour estimates, schedules, change management, technical risk management and project execution planning.
  • Support procurement activities by preparing technical content for RFQs, leading technical bid evaluations, reviewing vendor documents and providing recommendations for vendor selection.
  • Lead or participate in design reviews, risk assessments, value engineering workshops, constructability reviews, quality audits and technical issue resolution.
  • Engage with clients, contractors, suppliers, authorities having jurisdiction and internal stakeholders to resolve technical matters and support successful project delivery.
  • Provide professional engineering sign-off on deliverables where required and authorized, and support design registration submissions with applicable authorities such as TSSA in Ontario, as required.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate engineers and designers, promote technical excellence, and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering standards, tools, workflows and quality assurance practices.
  • Collaborate with project teams across multiple Worley offices and time zones; flexibility may be required to support project schedules, site visits, field walkdowns and short-duration travel.
  • Work from the Worley Oakville office occasionally as needed to support project and team requirements.


What you will bring

Technical and Industry Experience:
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, industrial building services and fire protection engineering principles, including heat load calculations, ventilation design, duct and piping systems, plumbing and drainage coordination, psychrometrics, equipment selection, system controls and fire protection interfaces.
  • Sound understanding of applicable codes and standards, including ASHRAE, SMACNA, NFPA, applicable building and fire codes, plumbing codes, occupational health and safety requirements, and relevant client or industry standards.
  • Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams and delivering multidisciplinary projects in consulting, EPC, owner's engineering or industrial environments.
  • Experience with HVAC, industrial building services and fire protection systems for industrial process buildings, electrical rooms, control rooms, analyzer shelters, compressor buildings, workshops, laboratories, warehouses and other specialized industrial spaces.
  • Experience with hazardous area ventilation, pressurization systems, gas detection interfaces, smoke control, emergency ventilation or other critical ventilation applications.
  • Experience coordinating fire protection engineering scope, including fire water systems, sprinkler and suppression systems, fire pumps, hydrants, standpipes, fire alarm interfaces, code compliance reviews and coordination with specialists or authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Experience with industrial building services such as domestic and service water, sanitary and storm drainage, compressed air interfaces, equipment room services, utility coordination, and integration with architectural and structural building layouts.
  • Ability to review and approve engineering deliverables with attention to safety, quality, constructability, maintainability, cost effectiveness and lifecycle performance.
  • Familiarity with energy efficiency, decarbonization, heat recovery, sustainable design and lifecycle cost considerations.
  • Working knowledge of engineering software and tools such as HAP, Trace, IESVE, Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam or similar platforms.
  • Experience supporting construction, site inspections, commissioning, troubleshooting and field engineering activities.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, coordination, organization and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize competing demands and meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively across disciplines, understand engineering sequencing and workflows, and support client design reviews and technical decision-making.
  • Strong leadership capability, sound judgment, customer focus, and commitment to safety, quality, continuous improvement and technical excellence.

Education - Qualifications, Accreditation, Training:
  • Typically 15 or more years of progressive experience in HVAC, building services and/or fire protection engineering, including significant experience with industrial, process, mining, energy, infrastructure or heavy industrial facilities.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario through Professional Engineers Ontario.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada.

For applicants based in the province of Ontario, the salary range is $149,294 to $175,641 CAD.
