Principal Lead Civil / Structural Engineer

Description

We are seeking a Principal Lead Civil / Structural Engineer who brings exceptional technical expertise, strategic leadership, and extensive EPCM project experience. In this role, you will provide discipline leadership for civil and structural engineering activities, oversee the delivery of complex projects, establish technical standards, and guide engineering teams across multiple projects. This is a key leadership opportunity for a seasoned professional who is passionate about engineering excellence, mentoring teams, and influencing project success at an organizational level.

What You'll Do
As a Principal Lead Civil / Structural Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the delivery of safe, constructible, and code-compliant civil and structural designs while driving technical excellence across the organization. Your role will include:

Technical Leadership
• Lead the civil and structural engineering discipline for complex oil and gas facilities, pipelines, and related infrastructure projects across all project phases
• Serve as the subject matter expert for structural engineering, foundations, concrete, steel structures, and modularized systems
• Review, approve, and oversee structural designs, calculations, specifications, drawings, and technical reports
• Establish and maintain discipline standards, engineering procedures, and best practices
• Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements, including CSA, CISC, NBC, provincial regulations, and industry best practices
• Provide technical leadership on proposals, FEED studies, detailed engineering projects, and strategic initiatives

Team Leadership & Collaboration
• Work closely with process, piping, civil/structural, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines
• Lead, mentor, and develop civil and structural engineers, designers, and technical specialists
• Provide technical oversight and quality assurance across multiple projects and engineering teams
• Foster a culture of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement
• Coordinate closely with process, mechanical, piping, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines to ensure integrated project delivery
• Support resource planning, workforce development, and succession planning initiatives

Project Execution & Delivery
• Oversee civil and structural engineering deliverables, schedules, budgets, and resource requirements across multiple projects
• Support project planning, execution strategies, bid evaluations, and client proposals
• Conduct design reviews, risk assessments, constructability reviews, and technical evaluations
• Ensure high-quality deliverables are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements
• Support clients and project teams in resolving complex technical challenges

Construction & Field Support
• Assist with responses to RFIs and technical queries during construction and commissioning
• Provide senior engineering support during construction, commissioning, and startup activities
• Participate in site assessments, inspections, and field reviews as required
• Review and resolve field issues, RFIs, and construction-related technical concerns
• Ensure designs remain practical, constructible, and aligned with project objectives and safety expectations

Safety, Quality & Compliance
• Champion engineering quality, safety, and continuous improvement initiatives throughout the project lifecycle
• Ensure adherence to corporate quality management systems and engineering governance requirements
• Promote safe design principles and compliance with environmental, regulatory, and client expectations
• Support technical audits, lessons learned reviews, and continuous improvement programs

About You
You are a highly experienced civil/structural engineering leader who thrives in multidisciplinary EPCM environments and enjoys mentoring teams while driving technical excellence. You bring:
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering (required)
• Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA (required)
• Minimum 15+ years of civil/structural engineering experience, including significant EPCM oil and gas project experience
• Demonstrated experience leading large multidisciplinary facilities projects and engineering teams
• Proven ability to manage complex technical scopes, project demands, and stakeholder expectations
• Strong leadership, communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills
• Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities

Technical Foundation
• Advanced structural analysis and design of steel and reinforced concrete structures
• Foundations, load calculations, equipment supports, and modularized facilities
• Civil and structural engineering design for oil and gas facilities and pipeline infrastructure
• Expert knowledge of applicable design codes, standards, and engineering practices
• Experience supporting large-scale EPCM projects from concept through construction
• Familiarity with international engineering standards is considered an asset

Software Proficiency
• Advanced knowledge of structural analysis software including RISA, STAAD, SAP2000, and S-FRAME
• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel and engineering calculation tools
• Dyna6 experience considered an asset
• Familiarity with 3D design and multidisciplinary model review platforms

Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree in Structural Engineering or a related discipline
• Experience serving as a discipline lead, department lead, or principal engineer within an EPCM environment
• Experience supporting large-scale facilities, pipeline, and SAGD developments
• Previous involvement in engineering standards development and technical governance initiatives
