Job DescriptionYour OpportunityAs a Principal, Healthcare Mechanical Engineer, you will be a visible leader and client-facing advisor, bringing deep expertise in the A/E industry and healthcare environments. You will lead mechanical teams on complex, high-impact projects, collaborate across disciplines, and guide clients through regulatory and technical challenges while advancing design and technical excellence.
You will also play a central role in growing the practice, driving business development, mentoring and developing teams, contributing to project delivery standards and quality control, and supporting workload planning and financial performance. You will balance hands-on leadership with strategic oversight, helping differentiate Stantec as an innovative, trusted, and forward-thinking healthcare design partner.
Your Key ResponsibilitiesBusiness Development/Marketing - Build Trusted Client Relationships & Grow the Practice- Act as a key client contact and trusted advisor, building strong relationships and helping healthcare clients navigate complex technical, regulatory, and operational challenges.
- Lead and support business development efforts to win new work aligned with sector, regional, and firm strategies.
- Drive the growth of Stantec's Health Sector Engineering practice in the Denver and Mountain regions in collaboration with regional and business center leadership.
- Partner with Principals, engineers, and marketing teams on proposals, interviews, and strategic pursuits, bringing technical insight and market perspective.
- Sustain and grow top-line revenue while supporting key operational and financial performance objectives.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, partners, and industry stakeholders to identify and pursue new opportunities.
- Represent Stantec through industry events, conferences, presentations, and thought leadership (including publications and speaking engagements).
- Contribute to strategic business planning, market positioning, and practice growth initiatives informed by industry trends and competitive insights.
- Mentor and support team members in business development best practices, fostering a high-performance, client-focused culture.
Project Design and Delivery - Lead Healthcare Project Delivery- Lead the successful delivery of complex healthcare projects from planning through construction, balancing quality, schedule, budget, and client satisfaction.
- Lead mechanical design for healthcare facilities, including HVAC, plumbing, and medical gas systems, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Define project scope, goals, and deliverables in collaboration with clients, regulatory agencies, and internal teams.
- Manage and plan the production resources and workflow to produce the design documentation, drawings, specifications, and calculations required for mechanical engineering projects.
- Collaborate with project leaders, architects, engineers, and partners to deliver integrated, innovative, and practical design solutions.
- Manage projects of significant scope, complexity, and revenue, maintaining accountability for technical, contractual, and client service outcomes.
- Identify and manage project risks, implementing proactive mitigation strategies to support successful delivery.
- Act as a quality reviewer on key projects, ensuring consistency with delivery standards and best practices.
- Build strong relationships with clients, partners, and stakeholders to ensure alignment with project goals and expectations.
- Drive continuous improvement in project delivery processes, tools, and practices.
- Apply strong engineering skills, experience and knowledge to the design and oversight of the design for building projects.
People and Practice Management - Mentor, Lead, and Inspire Teams- Hire and develop a high-performing team of engineering project managers, designers, and production staff.
- Mentor engineers and project leaders, fostering a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Plan and forecast staffing needs and resource allocation based on current and projected workload and technical expertise requirements.
- Reinforce project delivery standards, quality expectations, and best practices across teams to ensure consistent, high-quality outcomes.
- Oversee financial performance, quality control, and successful delivery of mechanical engineering projects.
- Drive continuous improvement of project delivery processes, tools, and standards in alignment with Stantec frameworks.
Technical Leadership & Growth - Advance Technical Excellence- Stay current with evolving healthcare regulations, technologies, and industry trends, integrating them into project delivery, standards, and best practices.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of Health Sector Engineering specifications, technical documentation, and design standards in collaboration with technical leaders across Stantec.
- Provide technical leadership across healthcare projects, reinforcing design excellence, consistency, and coordination across disciplines.
- Support the development of staff through guidance on technical skills, professional growth, and certification paths, aligning individual development with practice needs.
- Promote innovative, sustainable, and resilient design solutions that improve patient, staff, and facility outcomes.
- Continuously strengthen technical and leadership capabilities while contributing to the advancement of Stantec's healthcare engineering practice.
Your Capabilities and Credentials- 15+ years of experience leading healthcare mechanical engineering projects, with a proven track record of delivering complex, high-impact solutions.
- Demonstrated success leading multifunctional teams and managing projects of significant scope, complexity, and budget.
- Proven leadership and people management skills, with the ability to hire, develop, motivate, and retain high-performing talents.
- Exceptional client relationship skills, with a consultative approach and the ability to build trust and deliver outstanding service.
- Proven business acumen, including experience with strategy development, financial management, and performance analysis.
- Experience driving business development, including identifying opportunities, building relationships, and supporting pursuits and negotiations.
- Strong understanding of project management principles, delivery methods, and building systems, with the ability to manage scope, budget, schedule, and risk.
- Deep knowledge of healthcare codes and standards, including NFPA 99, ASHRAE 170, FGI Guidelines, and applicable Colorado building and energy codes.
- Advanced technical expertise in healthcare mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing, fuel oil systems, controls, and medical gas systems, including source equipment and central utility plants.
- Strong ability to contribute to coordinated, multidisciplinary design efforts and to deliver integrated project solutions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, polished presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills, including public speaking and client-facing interactions.
- Analytical and proactive problem-solving skills, with the ability to anticipate risks and manage scope changes effectively.
- Commitment to sustainable, resilient design and improving healthcare facility outcomes.
- Proficiency with industry tools and platforms, including Revit/BIM workflows, Microsoft Office, Copilot, and Bluebeam.
- Experience working with contractors across multiple delivery models, including Design-Build, IPD, and
- Design Assist.
- Possess a valid driver's license with a good driving record.

Education and Experience- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering
- 15+ years of related professional experience.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license required.
- Project Management Professional certification is a plus.
- LEED AP Credential preferred.
- Obtained ASHRAE Healthcare Facility Design Professional (HFDP) certification or similar specific to the engineering discipline is highly valued.
- Experience with Lean/IPD, Design-Build, or Design-Assist delivery methods is a plus.
- Familiarity with major healthcare systems and healthcare clients is highly valued.
