Context & Environment

The Principal Geoscientist performs at a mastery level in the generation, maturation, and evaluation of exploration plays and prospects and ensures the preparation and follow-up of the work program assigned to an exploration asset.

As a key technical contributor within the Region/Entity, the role supports an Exploration Team involved in Regional Synthesis, New Ventures, Portfolio Maturation, or Operations follow-up. Responsibilities include generating new geological concepts and promoting innovative ideas based on extensive oil and gas exploration experience. Basin knowledge must cover at least three of the following five regions: Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa.

During the assignment within the Region/Entity, the role may transition between teams within the assigned HUB based on business needs and priorities.

Responsibilities also include leading and overseeing all technical aspects of interpretation, promoting technical excellence and supporting sound exploration decisions.

Activities:
  • Direct technical contribution (interpretation at the workstation, prospect evaluation),
  • Strong contribution to the efficient drilling of exploration wells. Works to ensure acceptable conformity of post-drilling results with pre-drilling estimates. and
  • Promotes new ideas through effective communication.
  • Screen areas and/or opportunities to deliver a pertinent & documented recommendation, positive or negative.
  • Deliver high ranked prospects following internal processes, guide & manuals, and rules.
  • Guarantee the consistency and the proper integration of G&G data for play/prospect generation and maturation.
  • Deliver documented assessment of prospects (full range of uncertainty on volumes and risks).
  • Propose adequate data acquisitions and studies to reduce risks and range of uncertainties for the most promising plays and
  • prospects.
  • Ensure the effective communication of main recent findings in terms of regional knowledge and evolution of technical tools and
  • methods.
  • Act as a technical coach/mentor for junior exploration geoscientists of his/her team.
  • Actively contribute to the building / consolidation of TOTAL knowledge / know-how in the Exploration domain.
  • Autonomy is expected in the role
  • Capitalize on insights gained from studies conducted at various scales through the development of reference documents, strengthening TotalEnergies' exploration knowledge and experience. Share study results with the company's exploration community and corporate management.
  • Provide hands-on technical coaching and mentoring to junior geoscientists to support their professional development, representing up to 10% of the role's time.
  • Identify opportunities for subject matter expert (SME) support and recommend SME involvement when appropriate.

At Basin scale
  • Integrate and synthesize all relevant G&G data supporting play(s) definition.
  • Gather, integrate, and synthetize all relevant G&G data supporting play definition and characterization (well and seismic data,
  • structural geology, sedimentology, geochemistry, reservoir & seal characterization, pressure regime, fluid type(s), etc.).
  • Perform basin synthesis studies with focus on the description / risking of the various components of petroleum system(s).
  • Investigate and propose new themes, new ideas and innovative approaches for the exploration of the Region/Basin he/she has been assigned to, from near-field opportunities to pure frontier exploration.

At Block scale
  • Carry out the inventory of leads and prospects.
  • Evaluate prospects, using classical mapping / modeling techniques, leading to resource assessments, as well as relevant uncertainty analysis and risk assessment.
  • Contribute to the definition of the optimal work program (drilling and data acquisition) to best explore and appraise the block.
  • Contribute to peer-assist and management reviews for the final decision for these business opportunities.


Activities

Candidate Profile

Experience:

At least 15 years geoscience or exploration experience.

Education:

Master or PhD or Engineering Degree in Petroleum Geoscience.

Skills:

  • Demonstrates a rigorous approach to geology and geophysics (G&G), strong listening skills, the ability to challenge established paradigms, and openness to new ideas.
  • Works autonomously, demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, and effectively integrates multiple geoscience disciplines and scales to assess and develop prospectivity. Maintains a strong internal technical network to support collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Collaborates effectively as a team player, actively shares technical knowledge, and contributes to the technical development and mentoring of peers and junior geoscientists.
