Job SummaryReporting to the General Manager, the
Principal Geologist provides senior technical leadership for geology in preparation for, and in support of, feasibility-level studies for the Galore Creek Project. This position acts as the technical authority for geoscience, responsible for study integration, mineral reporting, and geological risk management, ensuring that geological inputs are fit-for-purpose, defensible and aligned with project objectives and down-stream studies.
The successful candidate will integrate geologic expertise with the GCMC technical group (including geotechnical engineering, mine planning, infrastructure, metallurgy and process engineering and water management) to support priority feasibility study objectives and decision-making.
The position can be based out of Vancouver or Smithers, British Columbia, with some travel to the Galore Creek Uhtlān Camp, a remote fly-in camp located in northwestern British Columbia. GCMC will provide travel from Vancouver to Uhtlān Camp.
Key Responsibilities:- Be a courageous safety leader, leading by example and fostering a proactive safety and sustainability culture aligned with the shared values of Teck and Newmont related to health, safety, environment, and communities.
- Serve as the geological expert for feasibility level studies, ensuring geology scopes, deliverables, and outputs meet FEL and Feasibility Study requirements, including alignment between schedule, cost and technical priorities.
- Act as the geoscience technical authority, accountable for the quality, integrity, and appropriateness of geological interpretations and datasets.
- Lead validation of geological and resource models, including estimation parameter review, sensitivity analysis, and assessment of uncertainty to ensure robustness for feasibility decision-making.
- Provide technical oversight and review of geological inputs to mineral resource estimation, mine planning, geotechnical, metallurgical, environmental, and infrastructure workstreams.
- Design, plan, and supervise geoscience and exploration field programs, including drilling and supporting studies, encompassing contractor management, safety leadership, site logistics, core logging, surveys, and reporting.
- Work closely with a Qualified Person (QP) under NI 43101 for mineral resource reporting, including oversight of data quality, assumptions, validation, and documentation.
- Coordinate closely with Mining, Geotechnical, and Metallurgy team leads to develop integrated, fit for purpose geological scopes that appropriately manage geological, structural, metallurgical and geotechnical risks and uncertainties impacting study outcomes.
- Ensure geological models and interpretations appropriately inform key mine planning assumptions, including selectivity, dilution, ore loss, mining phases, and geotechnical domain definition for open pit design.
- Guide the development and review of 3D lithological, alteration, structural, and metallurgical models in support of feasibility studies and mine design.
- Support the definition, refinement, and validation of geometallurgical domains, integrating geological, structural, and alteration controls to inform metallurgical performance, variability, and process design assumptions.
- Provide strategic input into study programs where required to address uncertainty and achieve feasibility level technical objectives.
- Identify opportunities to reduce long-term geological uncertainty and enhance project value through targeted data acquisition, studies, and application of emerging geoscience techniques.
- Ensure geological datasets, models, and interpretations are well-documented, traceable, and audit-ready, including coordination with internal SMEs and external consultants to support study deliverables and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure robust geological data governance, including database integrity, QA/QC systems, auditability, and alignment with CIM and NI 43101 best practices.
- Synthesize complex geological datasets into clear, defensible interpretations suitable for technical studies, internal decision-making, and external disclosure.
- Incorporate production of geology perspectives and reconciliation learnings into study assumptions to improve predictability and reduce geological risk.
- Supervise, mentor and coach intermediate and senior geoscience staff; provide technical review and guidance to consultants and contractors.
- Communicate material results, risks, and recommendations clearly and regularly to project leadership. Support preparation and review of technical inputs to regulatory submissions, partner reporting, and external disclosures, as required.
- Promote continuous improvement in geology workflows, study execution efficiency, and cross discipline collaboration. Leverage geochemical, mineralogical, and spectral datasets to support geological interpretation and geometallurgical modelling where appropriate.
- Facilitate effective knowledge transfer between geology and other technical disciplines to ensure consistent understanding of geological controls across the project.
The above key responsibilities are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive.Key Competencies, Knowledge, and Experience:- Degree in Geoscience or a related Engineering discipline from an accredited institution; eligibility for professional registration in British Columbia.
- 15+ years of progressively responsible experience in economic geology, resource geology, or mine geology, including experience in advanced stage studies.
- Strong technical background in porphyry copper deposits, including in-depth understanding of alteration systems, mineralization styles, and structural controls.
- Strong working knowledge of structural geology, and its application to resource estimation, geotechnical interpretation, and mine design, is an asset.
- Significant experience contributing to prefeasibility and feasibility level studies, including scope of development, technical review, and study integration.
- Production geology experience is strongly preferred, with demonstrated understanding of operational constraints and the influence of geological interpretations on mine planning, dilution, and metallurgical performance.
- Broad understanding of adjacent disciplines including mine planning, geotechnical engineering, metallurgy, geometallurgy, and infrastructure development.
- Proven ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
- Familiarity with industry standard geological software (e.g., Leapfrog Geo, ArcGIS, core logging and data management systems). Experience with AcQuire, MX Deposit, and OpenGround is an asset.
- Strong leadership, sound technical judgment, and mentoring capabilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparation and review of technical reports and presentations.
- High level of professionalism, strategic thinking, and ability to prioritize under study driven schedules.
- Experience working in remote or logistically complex helicopter-supported environments is an asset.
