Job Description

Stantec's Northern California Region (serving Northern California and parts of Nevada) is seeking a Principal Environmental Planner to join our Environmental Services Business Line to be based out of our Fresno, CA Office. This is a career growth opportunity to expand our Environmental Services team in the Central Valley Region. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 15 years of broad professional environmental experience with an emphasis on technical delivery, project and team management, and business development. Experience with community development, transportation, power, and/or water sector projects preferred. Your Key Responsibilities

The primary duties of this role are to:
  • Manage and assist with technical delivery of environmental services related projects across a diverse range of market sectors.
  • Project management and technical delivery is expected to include discretionary environmental permitting, California Environmental Quality Act/National Environmental Policy Act documentation, environmental technical studies, similar regulatory compliance services, and representation at stakeholder meetings/public hearings.
  • Provide senior oversight, strategic support, and permitting expertise for wide range of projects, including infrastructure, water resources, energy, and power projects.
  • Lead and support local and regional marketing and business development activities including opportunity identification, pre-positioning, preparation of proposals, interviews, and contracting that generates $1M gross revenue or more annually.
  • Supervise project/task order managers and technical staff.
  • Provide leadership in the local Fresno office in managing project related staff performance, and mentoring personnel for overall success of practice team.
  • Project management responsibilities include file management, coordination, and oversight of safety requirements, subconsultant management, team coordination/meetings, delegation and oversight of technical tasks, assisting in preparation and review of deliverables, client interfacing, project progress monitoring, and invoicing.
  • Manage client services including routine correspondence/meetings, opportunity capitalization, negotiation of commercial terms, health and safety metric reporting, feedback solicitation, and advocacy facilitation.
  • Identify, coordinate participation in, and represent Stantec's interests at conferences/stakeholder events related to technical delivery and marketing/business development responsibilities.
  • Interface with other Environmental Services colleagues to identify and enhance regional business development opportunities.
  • Interface with representatives of other Stantec Business Operating Units (Community Development, Transportation, Power, Water) to facilitate cross selling of services.
  • Promote a strong health and safety culture.

  • Ability to plan, direct, and monitor all aspects of large, multi-discipline projects and programs, medium-sized projects with a high degree of technical complexity, and small projects with minimal environmental constraints
  • A technical leader and mentor who can apply their skills to complex problems.
  • A strong leader who can lead and grow multi-disciplinary teams and capable of motivating others.
  • Position requires strict adherence to health and safety procedures, good organization skills and a passion for high quality of work.
  • Ability to check own work for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule, and recognize when technical problems are developing and initiate appropriate corrective actions.
  • Excellent analytic and communication skills, both written and verbal. Public speaking skills are desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and to prioritize and balance sometimes heavy business development and project workloads to achieve goals while keeping up with a highly mobile and changing environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Project, and Power Point).
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record required.
  • Ability for periodic travel, must have all required travel documents.

Education and Experience
  • A bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental policy, environmental planning, or related field.
  • A minimum of 15 years of related professional experience, preferably in environmental consulting, or working for a federal/state/local agency.
  • Demonstrated experience with leadership, managing projects, and leading marketing and business development opportunities.
  • High level knowledge of the California Environmental Quality Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Caltrans Standard Environmental Reference and Local Assistance Procedures Manual guidance, Federal Land Policy and Management Act, Clean Water Act, /Federal Endangered Species Act, National Historic Preservation Act, California Fish and Game Code, and California Coastal Act.
