Position Summary:

The Principal Engineer, Software Engineering - eCommerce and Portal Applications is a senior technical leader responsible for driving the design, development, modernization, and operational excellence of enterprise eCommerce and portal platforms. This role provides hands-on technical leadership across architecture implementation, software engineering standards, platform scalability, integration strategy, and development best practices.

The Principal Engineer partners with product managers, architects, designers, engineers, cybersecurity, infrastructure, and business stakeholders to deliver secure, resilient, and high-performing digital solutions. This position plays a critical role in shaping engineering direction, enabling delivery teams, and ensuring digital platforms support seamless customer, partner, and internal user experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership
  • Serve as the senior technical leader for eCommerce and portal application engineering initiatives.
  • Drive engineering strategy and technical execution for customer-facing and partner-facing digital platforms.
  • Translate architectural direction into implementable engineering solutions and development standards.
  • Lead complex technical design decisions across applications, services, APIs, and integrations.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to engineering teams on code quality, performance, scalability, and maintainability.


Application Development and Modernization
  • Lead the design and development of modern eCommerce and portal applications using scalable and reusable engineering patterns.
  • Support modernization of legacy systems into cloud-enabled, API-driven, and service-oriented architectures.
  • Build and guide implementation of core digital capabilities such as:
    • User account management
    • Product catalog and search
    • Shopping cart and checkout flows
    • Order placement and order history
    • Self-service account features
    • Content and document access
    • Notifications and communications
  • Promote composable, modular, and headless application approaches where appropriate.


Engineering Standards and Best Practices
  • Establish and enforce software engineering best practices, coding standards, and secure development principles.
  • Lead code reviews, design reviews, and technical walkthroughs.
  • Champion quality engineering practices including automated testing, performance testing, and observability.
  • Guide teams in applying CI/CD, DevSecOps, and infrastructure-as-code practices.
  • Ensure solutions are designed for reliability, recoverability, and operational supportability.


Integration and Platform Enablement
  • Lead development of integrations between eCommerce/portal applications and enterprise platforms such as:
    • ERP
    • CRM
    • Identity and access management systems
    • Product information management platforms
    • Content management systems
    • Payment gateways
    • Order management systems
    • Analytics and reporting tools
  • Drive API design standards and promote event-based integration patterns where appropriate.
  • Partner with enterprise architecture and platform teams to enable reusable services and shared capabilities.


Performance, Security, and Reliability
  • Ensure applications meet requirements for performance, scalability, security, and availability.
  • Collaborate with security teams to implement secure coding practices, authentication, authorization, and data protection controls.
  • Identify and resolve system bottlenecks, technical debt, and operational risks.
  • Support production readiness, incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Promote proactive monitoring, logging, alerting, and observability practices.


Team Mentorship and Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers and help elevate the technical capability of the organization.
  • Partner with product owners, UX teams, architects, QA, and DevOps teams throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Contribute to technical hiring, onboarding, and talent development.
  • Facilitate alignment across multiple scrum teams or engineering workstreams.
  • Communicate technical tradeoffs, risks, and recommendations to both technical and business audiences.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related field.
  • Typically 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with significant experience in enterprise application development.
  • 3+ years in a staff, principal, lead, or equivalent senior technical role.
  • Strong hands-on experience building and supporting large-scale eCommerce, portal, or other customer-facing web applications.
  • Deep knowledge of modern software engineering practices and patterns, including:
    • Microservices
    • RESTful APIs
    • Event-driven architecture
    • Distributed systems
    • Domain-driven design
  • Strong proficiency in one or more modern programming languages such as:
    • Java
    • C#
    • JavaScript / TypeScript
    • Python
  • Experience with front-end frameworks and modern web application architecture.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, source control, and DevSecOps practices.
  • Strong understanding of security, authentication, authorization, and data protection in digital applications.
  • Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with B2B eCommerce, customer portals, or enterprise self-service applications.
  • Experience with platforms or ecosystems such as:
    • Adobe Commerce / Magento
    • Salesforce Commerce Cloud
    • SAP Commerce Cloud
    • Shopify Plus
    • Adobe Experience Manager
    • Sitecore
    • Azure API Management
    • Identity providers such as Okta, Azure AD, or Auth0
  • Experience designing and implementing headless commerce or composable digital platforms.
  • Familiarity with:

  • Experience in regulated industries such as healthcare, life sciences, or distribution.

Ranges in Colorado/California/Washington/New York/Hawaii/Vermont/Minnesota/Massachusetts/Illinois State-specific locations may be up to 10% lower than the minimum salary range, and 12% higher than the maximum salary range.
