Overview

Who we're looking for

Toyota's Regulatory Affairs & Environmental Sustainability Division is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Principal Engineer - Electrification.

The primary responsibility of this role is to lead the company in compliance with regulatory requirements for electrification related projects by making company policy, tactical action plans, and overseeing the execution of these plans.

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Chemical and Materials Stewardship - Implementation Team, the person in this role will support the Chemical & Materials Stewardship department's objective to provide regulatory expertise and coordinated enterprise compliance validation and reporting for TMNA's traction batteries and other batteries used in TMNA's products.

What you'll be doing

  • Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all electrification related projects, including battery and fuel cell-based new products.
  • Track TMNA plans for electrification future project / products and pro-actively communicate, plan, and lead accordingly.
  • Closely collaborate with TMC Battery Design, TMNA/TMC Purchasing and North Carolina Battery Assembly Plant (TBMNC) personnel to track future electrification plans so that proper regulatory planning can take place early in project timing. Lead the overall strategy and process for EPA Pre-Manufacture Notices (PMN) under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) as needed.
  • Lead the preparation for and implementation of TSCA Pre-Manufacturing Notices (PMN) and resulting EPA Consent Orders for materials related to electrification projects. Utilize consultant support as needed. Coordinate with TBMNC to ensure ongoing compliance to Consent Order requirements.
  • Support NAMC and UMC with TSCA R&D Exemption related matters. Review and recommend for approval TSCA R&D Exemption plans. (Training, review and feedback on plans, and track status.)
  • Create framework strategy, then corresponding Tactical Action Plans (TAP) for implementation of new regulations or policies related to electrification projects / products. Act as global leader for NA driven regulatory requirements, gaining support and giving direction to TMC and other regions who design and produce projects for the NA market. (Ex: CARB Advanced Clean Cars II (ACCII), EU Battery Passport, battery end of life management, battery material circularity, battery labeling, etc.)
  • Lead TMNA's Battery Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulation implementation - now proposed in ~ 10 U.S. states, with more expected through the early 2030s. Take handover from CMS Advocacy and establish complex, comprehensive Battery Management Plans (BMP), collection strategy, external communication and regulated reporting, labeling, etc.
  • Lead CMS in fully coordinating all decentralized TMNA stakeholders for compliance implementation of electrification projects. Engage related SMEs as needed. Report/escalate status to Senior Management.


What you bring

  • Bachelor's degree in related engineering discipline or related field.
  • Chemistry and/or materials knowledge either through experience or education.
  • Ability to interpret complex regulations and create company policy and implementation plans to comply with those regulations, while minimizing impact on the business.
  • Minimum of ten years of automotive, battery, or regulatory compliance related experience.
  • Strong communication, capability to influence others, relationship building, negotiation and perseverance.
  • Strong, demonstrated, project management capabilities for highly complex, multi-year projects across diverse enterprise functions.
  • Ability to adhere to milestones and timely complete compliance and certification activities and reports.
  • Ability to represent the Chemical and Materials Stewardship Department to broad, high-level stakeholders across the enterprise, and to advocate for these colleagues to complete their related tasks timely and with high quality.
  • Full capability in MS Office suite, esp. including key project management tools, and interest in pursuing further IT tools to enhance the work.
