ABOUT THE TEAMThe Software Platform Foundations team at Anduril is dedicated to building the foundational systems that empower our engineering teams to develop, test, and deploy cutting-edge defense technology with unparalleled efficiency and reliability. We design and implement sophisticated automated systems that enhance efficiency, reduce manual labor, and optimize critical processes and control systems across our software development lifecycle and production pipelines. As a Principal Engineer on this team, you will be instrumental in ensuring the quality, traceability, and rapid deployment of our software solutions, directly contributing to our mission of delivering advanced autonomous systems.
About the roleAnduril's hardware ships from many product organizations, and nearly all of it runs on a shared software platform. We are looking for a Principal Engineer to define and ensure that our platform is robust and scalable enough to ship a device (we have many devices!).
You will be the senior technical voice representing the consumers of platform software - the engineers inside each business line who are integrating Lattice, flashing boards, hardening images, and shipping to a customer with a date on it. You'll find where the platform needs to go (or falls short), and then you will either build it, fix it, or drive the right ownership model. You will also act as central SME and the glue between several teams with distant reporting structures.
This is a deeply technical, leadership-oriented Principal Engineer role which will have big impact across Anduril.
What you'll do- Embed yourself with the engineering leads of every business line shipping tactical devices. Learn their build, their pain, and their forks.
- Develop and execute on a long term roadmap for supported compute platforms used throughout Anduril devices.
- Run a continuous gap triage. Every gap resolves to build / assign / decline / defer - no gap sits unanswered.
- Define the device baseline: OS and Jetpack, product-security components, resource-bounded Lattice service profiles, provisioning and key management. Then drive its delivery.
- Reclaim orphaned platform code. Start with unmaintained C++; deprecate homegrown primitives in favor of standard third-party libraries, drive dependency count down, and standardize shared-library linkage.
- Decide on who should own baseline closure definitions.
- Integrate with our Security organization to ensure all deployed devices are secure by default, and that our business partners can easily provision secure hardware without a tribal-knowledge handoff.
- Take on and permanently solve the unglamorous correctness work others route around, and raise the standards for other teams.
- Supporting HITL (Hardware in the Loop) as a product. Use that as a model for building out new "products" from DeviceOS.
- Work with other platform capabilities to build out the future of device management at scale.
You might be a fit if you- Have shipped embedded or edge systems where the OS, the security posture, and the application were all your problem simultaneously.
- You have deep experience with or a passion to dive into Nix and NixOS.
- Are adroit at telling Product teams "no, and here's why, but here's how we can acheive your goals" and having them thank you for it.
- You view an unowned library as a liability rather than someone else's story.
- Would rather be trusted by twelve engineering leads than have twelve reports.
Required Qualifications- 15+ years of proven experience building automated verification suites at scale.
- 5+ years experience working in NixOS environments, declarative package management, and virtualization environments is highly required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical industry experience.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Experience working in a regulated industry or with systems requiring high reliability and traceability.
