We are searching for the best talent for a Principal Engineer, Absorbable Biomaterials and Scaffolds, R&D - MedTech to support our handheld medical devices business. This role can be located in Irving, TX (strongly desired) or Raritan, NJ & work a Flex/Hybrid schedule with 3 days per week on-site. Domestic relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.
Our business offers a broad range of products and technologies, including surgical staplers, clip appliers, trocars, Aesthetics & Reconstruction (A&R) including Breast implants and sealing devices—that are used in a wide variety of minimally invasive and open surgical procedures.
Purpose:
The A&R business, i.e. MENTOR™, is a global leader in breast aesthetics and reconstruction, delivering science-based innovation and high-quality implantable technologies focused on improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
The Principal Engineer – Absorbable Biomaterials & Scaffolds will serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and a technical lead responsible for application of polycaprolactone (PCL)-based biomaterials for the development of 3D printed bioabsorbable scaffolds for soft tissue applications like breast implants. Mentor™ has entered in a collaboration with a external partner on the development such breast implant technology.
You will be responsible for:
- Collaborate with the external technology partner on everything related to the PCL materials technology for breast implant and/or soft tissue applications.
- Develop collaboration with 3rd party PCL and absorbable material suppliers in partnership with the external technology partner.
- Take ownership & lead the knowledge transfer on absorbable materials, suppliers, specifications, performance & safety data
- Collaborate with the partner on the material degradation, absorption, and mechanical performance testing, technical reports and deliverables into design history files as per ISO13485 and Mentor quality systems & protocols.
- Collaborate with internal and external cross functional teams (Pre-clinical, Biocompatibility, others) to co-lead the performance, safety and absorption pre-clinical testing.
- Translate material science into scaffold architecture requirements and product performance parameters.
- Partner cross-functionally (R&D, Clinical, Regulatory, Quality, Manufacturing) and with external partner on the end-to-end production development and design transfer process.
- As the material SME, provide guidance on:
- Material performance for design transfer and manufacturing scalability.
- Support regulatory submissions and technical documentation.
- Material performance in preclinical study design, data and report reviews.
- Claims development in collaboration with GSM and Scientific Affairs.
- Product performance testing.
- Build internal capabilities & external partnerships to advance biomaterial innovation and future material development.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- An advanced degree (MS or Ph.D.) in Absorbable Biomaterials Science, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering or related discipline is required.
- 5+ years of relevant industry experience in Medical Devices is required.
- Experience in absorbable biomaterials for implantable medical devices experience is strongly preferred.
- Expertise in PCL material properties, degradation kinetics, and formulation is strongly desired.
- Experience with application of 3D printing technology for scaffold fabrication and characterization is strongly desired.
- Familiar with industry standards, i.e. ISO 13485, ISO10993, ISO1460, ISO14971 and design control systems are strongly preferred.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :
$117,000.00 - $201,250.00

Subject to the terms of their respective plans, employees are eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).
Subject to the terms of their respective policies and date of hire, employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:
Vacation –120 hours per calendar year
Sick time - 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Colorado –48 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington –56 hours per calendar year
Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays –13 days per calendar year
Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
Parental Leave – 480 hours within one year of the birth/adoption/foster care of a child
