Power Generation Division (PGD) is looking for a Principal Data Scientist to support predictive monitoring, equipment diagnostics, and advanced analytics across power generation assets. This role helps improve reliability, asset health visibility, and proactive maintenance decision-making by delivering scalable analytical solutions for operational use.

This position requires a strong combination of data science, software development, production deployment, and power generation analytics experience. The individual will partner with reliability engineers, equipment subject matter experts, operations teams, and software developers to ensure solutions are technically sound, operationally useful, and aligned with business objectives.

Employees in this role provide technical leadership for advanced analytics, equipment diagnostics, and predictive monitoring solutions supporting Power Generation assets.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Leads development and enhancement of equipment diagnostic algorithms, predictive monitoring models, and analytical applications

  • Applies statistical and logic-based methods to identify failure signatures, equipment issues, and asset health trends

  • Converts analytical methods into production-ready implementation logic, documentation, and technical specifications

  • Validates, back-tests, deploys, monitors, troubleshoots, and continuously improves analytical solutions

  • Supports production data workflows, integrations, cloud deployment, and model migration

  • Partners with reliability engineers, equipment SMEs, operations teams, and software developers to deliver practical solutions

  • Provides technical guidance, review, and mentoring to data scientists and technical team members

  • Clearly communicates technical findings, model performance, and business recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned


The Ideal Candidate Would Have The Following:
  • Experience with regression, decision trees, rules-based logic, anomaly detection, and statistical analysis


  • Experience with Python, SQL, AWS, GitHub/Bitbucket, APIs, ETL workflows, and CI/CD

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in a quantitative, technical, or engineering-related field

  • Power generation, utility, renewable energy, industrial operations, or predictive maintenance experience

  • Data engineering experience building scalable production data pipelines and integrations


Job Overview

This position is responsible for leading the development of algorithms, modeling techniques, and optimization methods that support many aspects of NextEra and FPL business. Employees in this role use knowledge of machine learning, optimization, statistics, and applied mathematics along with abilities in software engineering with a focus on distributed computing and data storage infrastructure (i.e., "Big Data").

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide thought leadership, set technical strategy, and identify possible uses of data science methods
  • Explain methods and results to upper-level executives
  • Develop machine learning, optimizations or other modeling solutions
  • Oversee related employee work, learn new techniques being developed
  • Prepares comprehensive documented observations, analyses and interpretations of results including technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses
  • Works with big data and distributed computing platforms
  • Develops software and contributes to product development
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned
